I’m not sure if there has been a thread on this yet.

I know we have had the best QB and Coach that has ever entered the league and our owner, I know people have mixed opinions on Kraft but without him there may not even be a New England patriots team.

So what has been the biggest reason why we have become so successful over the years?

It’s a combination of things really. Team building , dedication, attention to even the smallest details, a culture has been created apparently as this team uses players from practice squads and finds a way to win. Belichick is an incredible coach. Now, my patriot hating co workers always point out that he was not good in cleaveland. Ok whatever, that’s because no one. I mean no one at all could make cleaveland win. Mistake on the lake. Tom Brady is a big part of it all. We have a quarterback who loves playing. He takes less money to make the team be able to get players. We also have guys like Amendola who are willing to restructure contracts freeing up money to get more players. Sacrifice, work, study and not being greedy. No statistic whores. It goes on and on

Perhaps it can be boiled down to unselfishness and getting and coaching guys who are not in football just for money. B.B. seems to get rid of players who are like that

I dont think there is a "biggest reason".

Its a collection of people, circumstances, uncompromising principles and philosophies that together, just works.

Stable ownership that butts out and allows a brilliant football mind run the show
BB's personnel and financial model
Acquiring players who are smart, tough and love football.
Greatest QB All-Time
No egos or divas are welcome (or won't last)
No need to live with a mistake. Either learn from it or be gone.
Internal competition
Will to win.
Never be satisfied with your situation

Everything Tom Brady
Everything Bill Belichick
Some parts Robert Kraft

Depth
Next man up
Drafting and signing the right players
Great team captains
Selfless players that work hard
A system that works for the players and coaches.

GOAT QB and GOAT coach. They make up for everything and have otherwise led some even flawed teams deep into the postseason.

@robertweathers had a great summary.

Trying to come at from another angle with BB.
Bill has been established for a long time and that has several distinct advantages (not that is has worked for Marvin Lewis so much):
  • BB has mastered his ability to communicate information in such an efficient way that he handles roster churn and can bring players knowledge of what they need to do (game time or practice) to a level that is well above the league normal.
  • The above is necessary because of the team/game plan specific nature of how we approach opponents
  • BB, while probably has an ego and biases, doesn't let it get in the way of always evaluating everything football from a critical perspective to constantly improve. Short Term coaches can't possible pass him in this regard because they are still in the early phases of trying to establish their culture and playing catch-up
  • BB gets the most out of his players because he does believe that play time is earned in practice. it doesn't matter if you were the #1 pick in the first round (not that we ever get that luxury) or an UDFA from some division II college. You do the right things and you earn playing time
I'll be back later, got to do some real work apparently

After all the stat wars, the culture remains:

A) People do what they're good at. (See B, C, D, below)

B) Kraft proceeds without tremendous ego. The good Mr. Wickersham's ravings aside, he rarely if ever interferes with "buying the groceries" or other football operations. Footnote: This is judging Kraft by the yardstick of his contribution to the dynasty, not his reaction to scandals. As much as we might have wanted him to be a fighter, he's not. He also didn't fight Belichick. He said "let me find football people I trust. I'm just a fan." The city of Washington, D.C. - and many other places - could do without their fantasy football player owners.

C) Belichick does his job. He understands the roles of hope (an on-field advantage when you're down) and planning (the majority of what he does is creating a plan for every situation, on or off the field.) He scopes the problem: Winning football games. That's why he looks grumpy at the podium. His job is to build teams (famously, not to collect talent), and to put them in positions to win.

D) Constants: The Pats culture is transmitted through certain constants. Brady, the 16-season constant. Other players in the 4-5 year range. The veterans instill "The Patriot Way." We can list its values all we want... I'll just list a few.

E) Values:

- Whatever the score, a TD is still 6 points, a FG is still 3, etc. It's not whether you'll win, it's how. This principle gets a tremendous boost from Brady's on-field presence... but they've all drunk this Kool-Aid. You've seen them lose, you've seen them stink up the joint, but it's very, very rare that they believe it's happening until the game is over. They don't allow for "plan B," which is ego-oriented: Finger-pointing, excuses, etc.

- Flexibility. We're so used to it, we take it for granted. Many NFL teams game-plan little wrinkles. We change the character of the team to better exploit matchups. We always know 1 week's opponent, and we plan for that week's opponent. And there are chess moves in reserve, the rejected hypothesis of how that opponent will work.

You can't overstate this advantage. Teams like Seattle say "we'll be who we are, we dare you to beat us." We all remember "We physical, they finesse." Well, if it's "finesse" to know your enemy, BB can join a long line of pansies going back through history to Sun Tzu. Know your enemy.

- Team, not individuals. Again, easier said than done. They've done it, successfully, year after year.

F) Miscellaneous: TFB is the greatest QB of all time. That helps - not just in adding his drive and talents, but in commanding the respect of a team and communicating the Pats' culture.

But I've said before - early on people called him a system QB. I don't think it's true, but he's not just Tom Brady. He's Tom Brady, in the universe in which he plays for Belichick's New England Patriots. "What ifs" cannot be solved. The point is, we could as easily credit the system and culture to vault a great QB to "The Greatest."

Second miscellaneous: Balls. No, nothing to do with PSI. I mean the Pats aren't afraid to bring back (with a couple other teams) the 3-4, and play a 2-gap 3-4. (I realize this is last decade, but it's an example.) They'll gamble on-field when the gamble is the more rational move. They'll disregard the Kipers of the world and "reach" in the draft. They DGAF what gets written or said about them. And it works.

Third miscellaneous: Accurate analysis of how football flows. They've correctly identified the role of the territory between the 20s. They've correctly ascertained that the game turns on a few big plays. They work like hell to mitigate the risk of the big play against us, and they'll be opportunistic in creating the big play for us.

I could babble on this subject all day, and substantiate what I mean in a couple places, but I gotta get going. Good thread.

Tom and Bill work harder than anyone else in the league. It’s a life lesson.

For me it is a simple answer: BB

To add to the long list: Ignore the noise - this mantra has become so ingrained in the psyche of the team that it is now even in the lexicon of the fans. The various scandals that would be distractions for any other team become rallying points and fuel the "us against the world" spirit. These days I actually hope that the other team sincerely believes in the cheating, headset, playbook stealing BS because it's a tremendous psychological advantage if your opponent enters the field already hopeless.

Attracting staff with a true desire to become part if the best in the game.

our coaches teach our players that having a bigger score then the other team, at the end of the game, is the key to having more w's then l's

And The Hill!

  • Having Brady is so very important. He sets the tone with his passion, work ethics and maniacal will to win. He has taken several marginally talented team well beyond what they should have been capable of.
  • BB and his player valuations. He is so in tune with the incremental value of each position. Would rather have 5 mid level talents than one Chandler Jones and poor depth. He rarely makes a poor spending decision and when he does he will move on from it if necessary.
  • Game management. Pats fully understand the clock, time outs, 2 point conversions, situational strategies like when to be aggressive or lay back and so forth. Much of it seems like common sense to Pats fans but when you watch other teams it clearly is not.

1. How many owners have the stones to give one guy total authority over both coaching and general managing?

Especially a coach who was fired after his first go-round as a head coach?

2. Kraft did this by changing his own ways after first being a hands on guy, then watching Parcells complain about it, and Pete Carroll get undermined by it.

How many other owners have changed their behavior for the good of the team?

3. Drew Bledsoe was the face of the team, and just got a huge contract.

What other owner would let their new head coach (who so far had a losing record) bench that guy for a young upstart?

----

I agree with everything said about Belichick and Brady... and Kraft has not exactly covered himself in glory over the last few years...

...but you have to give Krafty a huge chunk of the credit for the Patriots' success.

The league is designed for parity but it backfires when you have a QB who is the greatest of all time, is happy staying with one team and he accepts less money than he could get elsewhere. Combine that with the greatest HC of all time, and you have a team that will win far more often than not.

Agree with all of this and I think it can be summed up simply by saying that Belichick has been given the time and resources to build a real program in New England. So much of what other teams have to waste significant time on has been refined and delegated in such a way that they operate as close to 100% efficiency as it gets. Whether it’s scouting pro personnel, drafting, or getting players ready for their next opponent they are facing the Patriots waste as little motion as possible and are always focused upon what’s most important. In short they function at as high a level as a football organization can operate at, and hopefully those systems will remain and be continued by Caserio when Beluchick steps aside and Brady retires.

The System, which consists of the following:
1) Total preparation for every situation that can possibly occur
2) Finding and keeping coaches and players who completely buy into No. 1 and revert to it whenever the going gets tough
3) Believing in yourself and never giving up, or giving out, until the clock reads all zeros.

Go Pats!
