What happened to Sheard?

Jabaal Sheard played just /four/ snaps in the second half.

BB has essentially jettisoned:

Jones
Collins
Sheard?
Hicks
Easley

I like Flowers but is he really a #1 pass rusher caliber player? What happened to our front seven...

All I know is Sheard sure isn't going to get that payday now. Dude hasn't been playing very well as of late. Flowers was a lone bright spot last night on defense as his replacement.

Sheard was excellent coming in strictly to rush behind Jones and Nink last season. Just hasn't been cutting it as a full time player.

It's just BB staying ahead of the game by slowly evolving to his new look "no pass-rush" packages. To his logic, if the opponent expects pressure but gets none at all, maybe it'll keep them off balance thus creating chaos & confusion. Once again, BB is playing chess while everyone else plays connect 4...

No Jones on the other side of the LOS to demand double teams. Sheard now gets the majority of the attention and is just not effective in that role. He's great as a complimentary piece/pass rusher to a guy like Jones (who, admittedly, was also overrated on this board) but simply is not a premier pass rusher.

I thought he was better vs the run but as a pure pass rusher...no. I did believe he could give them some consistent pressure. Maybe 75-80% of what Jones gave them

It's just people saying that to make themselves feel better about the trade. You see it every time there is a trade or decision not to re-sign a player.

Well PatsFans need to be careful what they wish for...some of us including myself was not mourning when Chandler Jones was sent packing. Jones wasn't Von Miller or Seattle's Michael Bennett but he's a heck of alot better than what we have now.

I think you're right, and we probably should have seen this coming. But I definitely think the extent to which he's lacked impact has been truly disappointing. Even someone who thought he wouldn't be as good without a good pass rusher opposite him likely didn't predict this lack of production.

I felt Jones was overrated but I got into a pretty big debate about how Sheard is not Jones in preseason. Sheard is the ultimate complimentary piece to the pass rush. He's a great guy to have if you have a guy on the other side that is eating up double teams. Without that guy, he gets exposed which is why he's been riding the pine lately.

The cynic in me thinks that maybe they couldn't work out an extension and BB figures, "if he's not going to be here, let's give playing time to the guys who are going to be here to see what they can do."

I must concede. I thought he was great last season and looked at it as a sign of things to come as a full time player. I felt he would erase Chandler Jones in the minds of all who said trading him would hurt the team. I was even more confident when reading about how he was unblockable in TC and watching the preseason performances before the meniscus. I even wondered if we'd be able to retain him. But he has not looked the same at all. He has been disruptive some of the time and little else. He is nowhere near what I thought I'd see this season, which seems to be a microcosm of the D overall. They just have not performed to the level that I think a majority of us expected...and my opinion is not entirely based on last night's performance. I have felt this way since the first meeting against the Bills. I don't know if it's the knee or if we're simply seeing Jabaal Sheard's full potential, which may simply be what we're seeing. Maybe he is overrated. I don't know for sure. All I know is I'm disappointed and maybe Jones actually is the better player after all.

I remember going back and forth with you, Kontra. I may have to concede that you were right and I was wrong...though I maintain Jones is overrated. It appears I drastically overrated Sheard based on spot duty last season.
