What do we do now at cornerback?

I guess Philly have cleared this up a bit !

Bodden and Wheatley/Butler then as the starters

Leigh Bodden will start. Opposite him will be Jonathan Wilhite or Shawn Springs. Knowing Belicheck, it will probably be Springs since he's a veteran. Wilhite started 4 games last year.

I guess Philly liked our 2007 CBs?

I think Springs ends up as a situational nickelback/safety backing up Merriweather, Sanders, Chung and Tank

Why, did we just have a large pile of money hanging around?

A closer look at the contract that free-agent CB Shawn Springs signed with the Patriots:

It is a three-year pact, with base salaries of $1.75 million in 2009, $2.25 million in 2010, and $2.75 million in 2011.

The deal includes a $2.7 million signing bonus and workout bonuses of $100,000 per year.

This is a sizable deal for the 34-year-old Springs, who will earn $4.55 million this season. The payout reflects that the Patriots are counting on Springs to step into the No. 1 role vacated by Asante Samuel.

I agree with Mike.
