Patsfans after the Patriots draft ST Ace Matthew Slater in round 5, trading up to select him: "WTF?!?!"

Patsfans after punter Zoltan Mesko is selected in round 5: "WTF?!?!"

Patsfans after the selection of Ohio St rugby player Nate Ebner in rd 6: "WTF?!?!?!"

Patsfans after team selects long snapper Joe Cardona: "What, WTF?"

Could anyone see coming the way Patsfans would react after the team trades up to take a punter in the 2019 draft?

Patsfans, it's important to remember that past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior. Not the least surprised to see the Patriots show disinterest/contempt for the 5th round, as they have for at least a decade now. Even less surprised to see how many people can just never seem to remember the ways that their team operates.

Copy and save your post for next year. Haha

Can you imagine if BB cuts both Gost and Allen? He’d have one specialist do both jobs thus gaining an extra roster spot. Head would explode around the NFL.

I like this pick because Bailey is good at kickoffs and punts. He can replace Allen or just replace Gost for kickoffs in 2019.

I've long held a theory that Belichick would love to find one player to be both the kicker AND punter, in order to save a roster spot. Perhaps Bailey is the guy

And the cap implications: Two top tier players at their positions for ONE rookie late-round cap hit!!

But I just can't see BB taking such a risky proposition, especially since the guy does do fake punts and could get hurt there.

Would help make up for the extra QB spot on the roster they likely have to carry this year though . . . So who knows ??

If he does well in pre season, BB will have options. Either Allen's replacement or trade bait.

Didn't like the pick but when he booms a 65 yarder from our 10 to their 20 we will all say good punt. BB values ST's play and when HE thinks he can get someone that can help us win that area he ain't passing.

A few thoughts on taking a punter in round 5:

- If you think a 5th-round pick is too much for a punter, isn't $1.5 million too much money for a punter? Part of the return on this pick is a million a year savings against the cap for the next four years.

- The 5th is a normal point in the draft to target a specialist. Cardona and Mesko were 5th-round picks, Gostkowski 4th.

- This draft featured exactly two elite punting prospects: Wishnowsky, drafted early in the 4th, and Bailey. There was a significant dropoff after them. It's worth noting that the next-best kicker drafted in Gost's year, in round 6, never made a field goal in the nfl.

Allen was had a great SB53 but was below average overall. Bailey will probably replace him.

I see this garbage narrative is coming back.

Allen might get replaced but this is about economics and planning ahead. Allen said the team wanted to extend him for longer but he only wanted a year so he can try FA again next season.

Because 7th round picks don't matter, and they decided there was no one left worth drafting besides a punter. Don't watch day 3 of the draft guys, it's not worth it.

I agree. The draft is 4 rounds long. There are no good players in the 5th. They picked the punter in the 5th. You shouldn't watch day 3 because it sucks.
I completely disagree, because this is simply not true, at all.

based on probability it is. Based on total occurences it's not. But you also can't stop working because you expect to win the lottery.

If you take the number of players in the 5th-7th round who become contributing players, they don't even match in the aggregate the number of players in the 3rd round. It's completely true. Scroll through any given draft's 5th round and later and try to find starters.
