DRAFT Welcome to the New England Patriots Malcom Brown

I've seen a few things he's said. Sounds pretty good to me. Proto BB DL.

My suggestion is to keep an eye on Malcom Brown, DT #90, Jr.,University of Texas. Will come out this year. Only 20 years old, could be really good in a couple of years.

I'm sure glad he lasted til 32.

Welcome to the New England Patirots Malcom Brown

Patirots?

He is certainly someone that can start day one and he'll be a good (to very good) one-gapping 1-tech. I don't think he's a Wilforkian two-gapping DT though. His tape doesn't really suggest he can take on double-teams to any real degree.
Apparently, he spent the past year playing mostly on the outside.

They will at some point, but the cupboard is really bare there. Wendell is not a good starter and the left side is currently unmanned other than possibly Kline or Fleming
Other than being a starter for a SB champion you mean?

Wars are won in the trenches, right? Brown is a big kid who could anchor our DL for the next decade. Physical, powerful, can even get after the QB.

I feel this is a great pick since Easley is more of a gap-shooter rather than a run stuffer, and his health is a bit uncertain going forward.

So who are we going to get in rounds 2 and 3? I could see us going for OL, CB, or even WR/RB if the right guy is available.

Don't doubt what you're saying or anything, but where did you hear that they canceled a trade to grab him? That would make me feel even better about the pick!
A few different people mentioned it on Twitter, and here's one mention in an article.

There were definitely irons in the fire. A trade with the Texans that would have moved the Patriots out of the first round was reported to have been consummated. But it appears that was contingent on Brown’s presence.

Yup, I Feel that the Patriots had a trade-down deal prepared. But when they saw Malcolm Brown was still available, they decided to just stay up and take the player. And to me that is a great sign, because we do not draft people we do not feel are 1st round talents in the 1st. We generally trade down and accumulate picks. But it looks like BB and our scouting department felt the value opportunity of drafting Brown was too good to pass up this time.

A lot of mock drafts had Brown going earlier, around 15th in the draft. So to have him last all the way to us looks like a great value draft choice plus he fills a big need. Given his work ethic, prototypical size, athleticism, and coachability, in a couple of years, Brown might be seen as one of the better defensive linemen in the entire NFL.

New England Patriots 2015 NFL Draft priorities, not necessarily in any particular order:

Defensive Tackle - check
Offensive Guard -
Cornerback -

Although I'm a big fan of Brown, certainly over Goldman or Jordan Phillips, I'm just glad we picked someone. That was my second night in a row staying up till 4am, and when the trade rumours started circulating I felt like crying. Another long night ahead of me tonight...

Not sure why but this year's 1st round bored the hell out of me. And watching it at 4am here in the UK didn't help. Not enough trades?!

I fell asleep on the sofa around 3am after the Bengals took Ogbuehi at 21...woke up an hour later just as the Packers took Damarious Randall at 30. Perfect!

Definitely happy with the Brown pick. Best Player Available + fits our most glaring need.

OG/CB/WR would be nice in Rounds 2/3/4 but really I just want Bill to go BPA. No reaches!

Remember we have 1 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd and 2x 4th... Would be great to get OG/CB/WR/RB

Welcome to the team Malcolm.

I fell asleep last night and missed who we took - happy with that though. I was talking about Brown going in the teens last night to a friend, so it's quite a steal.
