WEEI 850 sucks

Go ahead and put up 4 show a day that have no entertainment value and just talk sports. See how well it does in a market like Boston (or ANY market for that matter).

The folks at WEEI know what they're doing. As much as the majority who posted in this thread hate 850, its probably a 10-1 ration in those who favor it.

That gets me. Talk Pats then. Talk Celtics. Talk Bruins. Talk bowl games. Talk college hoops. Something other than twelve hours of "why didn't the sox land player-x?"

This is why you aren't in charge of producing WEEI. Talk Celtics? Bruins? Bowl games? College hoops?

IN THIS AREA? Nobody would listen. This is from someone in the business who does his research.

That's not entirely accurate. The shows begin promptly... Dale and Holley begin at 10:07 and the Big Show begins at 2:07. What happens is within each show, they will often run late which runs over into the next hour. In otherwords if the 3:00 hour on the Big Show ends at 4:01, then the 4:00 hour won't begin until 4:17.

Ryan knows his stuff. The Boston area doesn't give two shakes about college sports. There also is very little interest in discussing mediocre Bruins and Celtics teams.

This is a Red Sox city, first and foremost, with the Patriots being a distant 2nd. Also, the city is overwhelmingly provincial, meaning people here just won't talk about big sporting events if it doesn't involve a local team. That's why the Big Show had 4 hours of Drew Bledsoe talk today and nary a word was mentioned about the World Series.

Football is King in this country and NE and Boston are not immune. If WEEI continues to stick to baseball and their gimmicky smug garbage, they will become stale and old quickly. All it will take for a real sports station to compete with WEEI is a top notch signal.

Well it's worked for them for over 10 years now, and I see absolutely no evidence whatsoever that they are anywhere near becoming "stale and old" anytime soon...

They seem to just keep going and going.

The worst has been D&C. The misleading garbage about Patrick is really bad. Most of it is just made up.

They are close to jumping the shark. Who knew the Soviet Union would collapse? I'm sure there are people like me who don't listen anymore, who simply are fed up and can't take it. If there's one of us there are many. If the Red Sox continue to slide... if they trade Manny, for instance, that whole subject will lose alot of juice. Manny was a big time ratings grabber. I' m a huge sports fan and if I can't take their drivel I'm not the only one. .

Well, their ratings are as high as they've ever been. People like you were saying 2 years ago "well they only have such high rating because the Red Sox are doing so well." Of course, the past two years have proven that to be false.

You cannot possibly be serious. There will always be something to talk about with regards to Boston baseball, with or without Manny. Hell, sometimes a guy gets talked about more when he's gone than he was when he was here (see Martinez, Pedro and Bledsoe, Drew) so your logic is faulty if you think that just because he leaves town, he stops being a "ratings grabber."

I have no doubt that the WEEI hacks share your overconfidence. Their barely disguised contempt for the audience is a symptom of problems they probably don't recognize yet. Listening to them is like having a smug mechanic at a car dealer smile and tell you he'll replace your intake manifold for 700 bucks. A fool will smile back and pay the slob. People who have self respect take their business elsewhere.

Much of the credit for their success goes to Glen Ordway.

Yet, i just cannot stand him at all.

Well i guess i am a rarity on this board as i actually like WEEI. I can't really comment on D&C as I don't listen to them...tried a couple times but couldn't get into it. Dale and Holley are great (and holley is great on NEST when he makes an appearence) I actually like the big show. There are times when they are all just yelling and i turn it off, but usually they are on top of things with the recent news (and being out of state listening online that's a big reason why i tune it)

Ordway is pretty good. I grew up listening to him and Johnny most on the radio, so it's a voice that i have recognized for a long time (i still remember his appearence on "cheers" Ordway is usually pretty insightful and brings good stuff to the table----sometimes he has some real wierdo's on the show though. (although i have never hear felger or borges, so that's great )

Overall i only listen to those two shows, but for us transplanted NE ers it's good to be able to get some sports talk back home

Well I'm not one of them so my vote goes in a different direction..
10-1?? I doubt that.. People like it for different reason.. I tend to like educated discussions backed with fact.. Something WEEI tends to stay clear of.. To many opinions from people who have no contacts or experience int he sport..

did you see this "(most days)".. and I forgot to mention this. many times when they do start on time, they tend to end earlier with a long commerical break and coming back and just stating whats up next..

Just my personal preference.. Saw the thread and felt it was a great opprotunity to share my feelings..
BTW I hate NASCAR and people will tell you that Nascar is the most popular sport in the world.. That is when I laugh and say I'm pretty sure people in India and Africa could care less about Cars driving around in circles... hehehehe

I like WEEI, but am selective as to what I listen to. Usually listen a lot on Monday's and Friday's during football season. Avoid the 6-10 slot political man show. Like Dale and Holley, less screaming and they tend to be more rational. Do not care for the Big Ego Show, find Ordway and crew more intent on yelling over each other than discussing sports. Used to be stuck with the "Score" and found that to be terrible.

I like a lot of their guests Smerlas, DeOssie, Curran, McAdams... as well as their spots with Esaison, King, Gammons and others who weigh in on the state of the NFL and Pats.

I like WEEI. Except that morning show with that insufferable blowhard Gerry Callahan. Never was there a bigger bag of wind with nothing to say! But the Dale and Holley show and the Big Show are highly entertaining imo. They talk about what the fans want to talk about which is Sox and Pats. I don't live in Mass anymore and I enjoy listening to the internet stream. Better than listening to Yankee fans on 'FAN!

They lost the contract to broadcast the Sox games. I'm not sure if the new station takes over this April or next; but without the Sox on their air, EEI may shift away from promoting them a little.

Still, they seem to be growing like a weed. All day yesterday was talk of the new station they took over in Springfield. (80 miles or so west of Boston for all you non MA residents.)

I do look forward to the Five-head's brain imploding when Deval Patrick takes over in the state house and the Dems take over Congress.

I gave up on WEEI. Occasionally, I will listen to Dale and Holley if they are talking about something good.

I cannot stand the Big Show however. I think they try to brain wash you into thinking and believing what they believe. You cannot have a simple discussion on that show. Ordway feeds you bull****, if you don't eat it then your a moron. If you call up to say you disagree with Ordway's views on a subject, you get blown up. If you like Manny Ramirez your an idiot.
Steve Deossie is meathead too. I remember during the World Cup, he refused to talk about it. He said its not a sport, despite the fact its the most popular in the world. These guys aren't a sports radio station, they are a redsox radio station.

I admit I like Dale and Holley, Mike Adams is pretty good too, but thats it. The Big Show is easily the most idiotic show and when people tell me a story that starts off with "I was listening to the Big Show today" I immediately dont pay attention and assume that that person doesn't know anything about sports in the first place.
If I wanted to l isten to guys yelling and arguing with each other about how Manny Ramirez is a cancer Id listen. Or I can just think of the ridiculous numbers the guy has put in year in year out and laugh and change the station.

This topic comes up at least once a year during football season. It's not just Red Sox they talk about ad nauseam it's baseball period. All day, all year. "Hello and welcome to The Big Show and All Patriots Monday. Boy, did you see Adam Wainwright last night?.....blah blah blah baseball blah blah. It's where all there knowledge base and passion is so that's what they stick with. What kills me is they can't even spend one hour on the topic of football. It HAS to be interlaced with baseball talk. I always change the station immediately, but I often forget to switch back and miss the Belichick interview.

I am tired of this radio station. It has the lowest content-to-commercial ratio of any AM station I've ever listened to. If there is 20 minutes of sports talk an hour I'd be surprised. And what little talk there is is of course all Red Sox crap. On average, I'd say you get maybe two to four minutes of football talk an hour on EEI, even in the middle of football season.

Friggin' lame!!

Sorry, I had to vent.

This is why I listen to Sirius exclusively. Bababooey!!!
