I'm not talking about the games he was out. He played in eight games and racked up a whopping 126 yards receiving. Go ahead and try to rationalize how that's anything other than a colossal bust.

Because his first year doesn't matter much.
Patriots' drafts are for players to fill needed roles in years 2-4.
If they become stars, most of them sign extreme contracts elsewhere, and are replaced by players in their second and third year.

The NFL, recently supplemented by fantasy football, has a money maker in the draft. They will do everything they can to create and perpetuate fan's beliefs that the future success of their favorite teams is primarily found in rookies coming in as fresh stars, in the role of the hero, stage right. It is a con job. Belichick realizes this, and has no interest in making you or any other fan happy by playing the game. He has other interests. His dedication to them is what's brought the team success.

You can't have both.

We have a problem with philosophy:

bb has been bringing in guys who are slow, not sudden, but are excellent at tracking the ball and excellent at winning 50-50 balls.

the problem is Brady Prefers Quick twitch guys that can get open and prefers to not throw 50-50 balls.

Then add in the difficulty in learning option routes and you can see how young receivers are going to struggle in our offense.

ideally we should dumb down the offense for the youngsters, but bb never does that. Something has to give.

option 1 - we resign Brady and bb has to sign veteran receivers that can separate and know how to read defenses to make the option route work.

option 2 - we pass on Brady and put in stidham. He will have a learning curve, but he will throw 50-50 balls and Myers should have a career year. I think it is interesting that when Harry came back, Myers reps decreased and our offense went from bad to putrid!

Damn these scouts for forcing us to win two 3 of the last 6 SB’s and have the best defense this year with a bunch of scrubs

I’m on board with this until someone can explain to me the Julian Edelman situation from 2009-13.

  • As a rookie, just his second game, he fills in for Welker and gets over 100 yards receiving.
  • He practices with the team and Brady for the next FOUR years but gets almost no playing time at receiver, besides some reps as a fourth option. He makes his name as a punt returner.
  • He hits free agency in 2013 with a very small market. He is recovering from an injury, but the Patriots show little interest despite losing Welker.
  • Patriots sign Amendola to replace Welker.
  • Patriots make second round tender offer to Emmanuel Sanders.
  • The same day, they re-sign Edelman in a back page blurb while the fan base is intrigued about Sanders. Turns out there was a very small market for Edelman, and the Giants low balled him. Edelman returns to the Patriots despite clearly not being a projected starter.
  • Amendola gets hurt in the opener.
  • Edelman replaces Amendola and immediately dominates.
  • 2013-present Edelman is consistently the best Patriots receiver and one of the league’s toughest matchups.
Is there a more bizarre story in sports than this one? Tell me this team has a strong grasp on what they’re looking for in a WR.

You may have missed the memo, but the Patriots had drafted a WR in the first round, under BB, exactly never prior to this year. Here's a clue: they didn't use that first-round pick on someone they were banking on being a project and not contributing this year, any more than they signed AB for the purpose of fully revealing what a raging hypocrite who cares more about himself than the team RK could be.

Have the Pats drafted many players fully planning on not getting much out of those players their first year? Absolutely. To make the argument that they did so with Harry is just to not know anything about football and not have been paying attention.

Or he lucked out and ended up with the greatest of all time at the single most important position in sports who allows him to make a lot of moves 31 other coaches couldn’t make.

Yeah, that's it. Luck.

Yeah, that's it. Luck.
Oh no you’re right Bill knew he would go on to become the greatest of all time. That’s why he waited till the 6th round to grab him. No luck involved at all. All part of the plan.

we need new scouts...I'm on it...BRB------------------->V

When you focus on the WR drafting, it's somewhat more clear that we miss way more often than hit. How much of that is the staff and how much of it is Brady?
I can't see any of this being on Brady. It's not like those WRs move on to other teams and suddenly look good.

You're fighting a straw man. The title of this thread suggests that our scouts are inept at drafting WRs so we should consider hiring new scouts. Considering our track record on Wide Receivers over the past 20 years, 3 good WRs in 20 years -- Troy Brown (8th round 1993), Deion Branch (2nd round 2002), Julian Edelman (7th round 2009), the statement has some merit.

On the other hand OP did not state that "the team is completely broken," that was your own made up statement.
And that's being generous in giving them credit for Edelman. He wasn't even a WR in college.

I’ve always thought that Pittsburgh wide receivers are really good, because they are coached up in a system that caters to their strengths.

meanwhile our guys have to read the defense pre snap, at snap and post snap and be 100 percent in synch with Brady is seeing to even have a chance of having the ball thrown their way.

Is it too difficult an ask? Seems like the proliferation of the spread offenses in college is making the ability of our coaches to coach up a young wide receiver draftee tougher than ever.

ideally we probably need to draft some quick twitch receivers in the sixth and seventh rounds and let them burn a red shirt year while learning the system. then break them in slowly in year two and maybe we have something in year three.

otherwise, bb needs to hit on wide receiver free agent signings,

ps: Cooper, green and maybe Anderson are available this year,
