We need CB's, a punter and a returner for next year

Our CB "problems" have to do with the pass rush. You can't expect a corner to have cover a guy for like 5 to 7 seconds, and that's what our guys have had to do at times. It has nothing to do with trading Hobbs.

I personally felt we should've paid Asante, but with the way he's talked about us since leaving, I get the feeling he didn't even want to stay here if we were going to pay him.

Regardless, the pass rush and/or scheme that we play is a bigger problem than the talent we have at CB IMO.

Our pass rush?? What's wrong wth it, every 2nd play results into a qb hurry or sack. Our problem is secondary coverage and we suck at it. Maybe we just need a better DB coach. Our coverage is seriously pathetic back there, I feel like puking at times.

Bertil - You clearly don't know how to read because if you did, you'd have seen Geddie spewing garbage and attacking people left and right and you wouldn't have been stupid enough to open that pie hole you call a mouth in support of Geddie..

BTW, SFBs, I watch more football now than hockey, though I am slowly getting back into it.. How about you stop posting if you aren't going to actually bring anything to the conversation?

You're defending a post that was pure unadulturated idiocy, which in hindsight is completely understandable, given the nature of your own posts. It had NOTHING to do with anything football related, just pure gutteral insults. I didn't read ALL of the guys posts, but the one quoted did actually have a football related point.

The only one spewing garbage and attacking people left and right from what I'm reading...is you! So I'll continue to post whether you like it or not.

I realize that we are all in a bad mood, given the on-field performance of our favorite team. However, it is my most fervent hope that we could at least raise the level of discussion to somewhere above that of the average Jet fan without resorting to this. Apparently, I was mistaken.

The pass rush is fair against some teams but against the Colts, NO, or any other good team with a better than avg O line, the pass rush usually consists of 4 players bullrushing towards the QB but doesnt even get close. What happened to the stunts run earlier this decade that actually caused sacks almost at will? Well, McGinest, Vrabel et al were far better pass rushers than exist now and, more importantly, the scheme is totally different.

With an effective pass rush, imho, our CB's would be fine so long as the safeties do their job. Too often the safeties are too quick to bite on play-action or too slow to help out over the top. That leaves the CB's without the help they expected.

A better pass rush and better safety play would go a long way towards stopping some of these avg QB's (Chad Henne) from looking like all-pros. 2 or 3 weeks ago I saw Zolak on tv detailing 8 to 10 plays that made the CB's look awful, but then he showed why it was the safety who actually had responsibility. Who can forget the wide-open NO receiver catch and run for that nauseatingly easy TD? Whose responsibility? Meriweather!

Anyone would have thought we had just gone 0-16, and not have won the AFC East

Sorry, Bertil, then you are being purposely ignorant because Geddie was attacking people yesterday long before I replied to any of his posts. If you had your head out of your arse, you'd know that. As for you posting, great. Actually bring something to the party instead of your b!tching.

Well, considering that you brought nothing to the party and that others were already discussing the topic, you need to look in the mirror.

Geddie's posts were nothing but self-serving garbage so he could tout his bleacher report article.. Not to mention his ignorance with calling people mental midgets, babies, etc..

But, i guess a fly-by-night poster like yourself who only pops in on the rare occasion feels justified on slamming regular posters who get sick and tired of the trolls who blather on..

I know that Im well ahead of myself, but the way Jacoby Jones played yesterday I wouldnt mind him being on the pats 2010 squad. He would be a great compliment to (assuming he would be back next year) Moss/Welker.

If he's still under contract, I would trade a late 2nd/early 3rd for him. But still I would draft a WR with one of our early 2nd picks and cut Slater. He's useless on this team...

And to think we would still have Tate coming back next season and Welker coming back late in the season. Jacoby Jones would do some damage in this offense with Moss and Edleman (until Welker gets back) in this offense. To me, Jacoby Jones would do much much better in this offense than Jabar Gaffney ever did. I would seriously make this sign/trade in this up-coming offseason.

I do agree, the Pats need to sign a better punter. Hanson just isn't that good.

Said as a troll who is blathering on...

Another couple of FA WR to add to the list: Malcolm Floyd and Kevin Walter who was under the radar this year.

First of all don't expect much unless there is a labor deal. The Krafts are to close to this and have already said they are not giving out long term deals until they have economic certainty. So Tom Brady could go into his final year. The FA list is pathetic, I mean some of these guys should have been locked up.

Gostkowski, Mankins, Wilfolk, Neal, Bodden, Jarvis Green, Faulk.

Their talent is so thin they can't really afford to lose any of them. But they probably won't sign any of them. They might franchise Wilfolk.

They better offer Ski some real money or he'll be a Cowboy or Texan on day 1. The "genius" will think he can just draft another K.

They also won't delve into FA that much. They should go after a wide out.

But the problems on this team are 3rd Wide out, No pass rush so that could be 1 player it could be 3, poor coverage and they could use more help on the o-line.

They need another good draft. Let's face it, 2010 is waste. Welker's injury won't help. Maybe in 2011 the Krafts will realize they have been cheaping out to long and that will wise them up. I wrote about this a month ago in my well-viewed bleacher article. It's over boys. We're back to the Pete Carroll days. This is no longer an elite franchise.

A trifle pessimistic but with some grains of truth.

I don't think the Patriots will be major players in free agency.
Their hands are tied somewhat because they made the playoffs.
They have to lose a good player before they can sign a good player.
They will sign a few second tier free agents. Trouble is you only
get what you pay for.

With regard to their own free agents, I expect them to franchise
Wilfork ( if there is no witten agreement not to do so). He was awfully
cheerful throughout the season. They will also tender offers to Mankins
and Gostkowski. I expect someone will be willing to give the Patriots a
1st and 3rd round pick for Mankins. (Remember Curtis Martin?) Bodden's
value has risen due to a good season. Faulk and Green are over priced.

I expect the Patriots to re-sign Hanson and Neal. Seau will re-sign in November.

I agree the Patriots need to follow up the 2009 draft with another good
draft. They are in their current defensive pickle because of non-productive
drafts, poor trades, and free agents who have not panned out.

Right, because Ellis Hobbs was just that damn good. When you say "he was clearly our best CB," it's like saying lethal injection is clearly the best way to be executed.

Yeah, what do you want the Pats to do? Get rid of Wilhite? Butler? Bodden (FA)? Springs? Wheatley?

A returner? They drafted the NCAA career leader in return yards (Tate).

How about they address the most pressing need, pass rush.

Add WR right up there with the pass rush in need

Did you originally write that article in crayon?

I know I am not all mr positive about the team all the time but for an average Patriots fan that is suicidal after the loss of Welker,I suggest they do not read your column or if they do I suggest they start digging thier grave first.
