Am I the only one who thinks Drew Brees isn't that great? There is a reason that he was let go.
He was let go because the Chargers drafted Philip Rivers very high in the 2004 draft, which just happened to be the first year Brees emerged, and because he is coming off a serious shoulder injury, and because Rivers is cheaper and younger than Brees. IF Brees can recover from the shoulder surgery (that's a big if) the Saints have a very good quarterback. Obviously they felt he will be OK.

Anyone else get the feeling that the Dolphins had to "settle" for Culpepper after they couldn't get a deal worked out with Brees?

It will be interesting to see how BB reacts to this in regards to the #3 QB position. BB usually brings in a guy who can mimic a majority of the QBs the Pats will be facing during the year.

Culpepper was at best their third choice. Couldn't afford Brees, couldn't pry Schaub out of Atlanta. Culpepper hasn't been anything since he lost Moss, and even Moss had issues with him. Daunte bought his own overblown hype and then fell flat on his face before his knee blew out. I predict he will struggle adjusting to a new team and Saban's personality. He's not a leader but he has the ego of one and he can't deal with criticism.

For a BB disciple Saban is taking a rather unique approach to building a championship caliber team. He spent all last season trying to change the culture in Miami, and he may have just traded it away for a lot bigger potential headache than Rickie. He's operating like a guy already feeling the pressure to get it turned around in a hurry - like playing his starters in that last game to top 8-8 barely. Taking shortcuts, if they backfire, could really come back and bite him in the ass. But it's as if the potential for Brees upped the ante and now Miami can't step back.

Funny thing is, Belichick guys Savage and Crennel are doing the exact same thing in Cleveland. Spending money like it's out of style. 2 years, $7M for Ted Washington ? WTF ?

Culpepper = Bledsoe

Well, I for one agree with you. I think Culpepper is a much better QB than Brees. MUCH better. This is not good news for the Pats. Culpepper is one of the better QBs in the league.

Did you watch him last season before the injury? I think he threw more interceptions than completions

Without Moss for the first time, Cullpepper had a QB rating of 72.0 good for tying Joey Harrington for 27th place, one spot below Brooks Bollinger. A big contributor . . . 6 TD / 12 INT.

Twice as many, in fact . . .

Thank YOU, Free Agency Gods! The idea of facing Brees twice a year... eh... not so excited about.

I'm with you T-Shirt...Culpepper reminds me of Bledsoe, he can be forced into mistakes. Can Poteat tackle Culpepper.

culpepper to miami and brees to saints. probably means leinhart could end up with the titans now.tenn is having a good offseason.

I agree with the majority that Culpepper is teh suck (and sort of injured), so you don't need to remind me of that, but the Vikings only took a second round pick for him??

There's just something that looks weird with the sentence "with Miami sending a second-round pick to the Vikings in exchange for the Pro Bowl quarterback". He's gonna be the starting quarterback for a franchise that's trying to rise to the top tier for Pete's sake!

Call me 'thick' but if Saban is signing erratic players like Culpepper, I think I have stopped worrying about Miami anytime soon. I am really surprised considering that we thought Saban was in a Belichick mold.

Granted, McNair is jsut about done as a full-time starter, but the Titans have a very good QB in Billy Volek who also happens to have a great rapport with Drew Bennett.

I honestly think that the Titans are looking at an OT.

Culpepper was erratic last year for several reasons, but his numbers before that are pretty amazing. I think Saban knows what he's doing.

Also, the Redkins won with Rypien, Ravens with Dilfer, and the Bucs with Johnson, so it's not an absolute necessity to have a Tom Brady at QB.

I hear you. And maybe it will work out great - Saban has been inclined to use mobile QBs in college and Culpepper, given he's physically sound, certainly meets that criteria. The thing that gives me pause is whether Culpepper's individual numbers translate into a winning TEAM. You can certainly say that many parts of the Vikings were dysfunctional enough that no QB could have won a lot of games. But Miami should be a reasonably solid team so we'll see how Culpepper's style fits in with winning a lot of games. To me, Culpepper is a QB-centric - another guy who is QB-centric, altho different style certainly, is Peyton Manning, and we know how that has worked out. Do you regard Rypien, Dilfer, and Johnson as QB-centric or QB-facilitator types ?

This season is going to tell us a lot about Saban and whether he knows what player capabilities win games in the NFL rather than in the college arena.

Let's put it this way.....

Saban was 3-7 and getting shelled in the press and the fairweather, piece of crap fans down there (if you can call them "fans") were calling from his head........then he won 6 in a row (4 out of 6 against teams that ended up going 4-12 I believe, one game where they caught Marty "the brain" Sh*tenheimer in one of his many idiotic coaching stupors (in which he makes coaching decisions that totally "implode" his team), and one against OUR f'in SCRUBS....who almost BEAT them........and now all of a sudden they are talking about how they are someday going to put up a statue of Nick Saban right next to the statue of Shula!!! Seriously, these fans and the Miami media must smoke alot of crack........one minute he SUCKS.....next minute he is the second coming of Vince Lombardi.....unreal....Doofins SUCK!!!!

I am not sure......

If Culpepper is MUCH better than Brees.......I think that when healthy Culpepper can throw more variables at you (ie running threat, and can pass)......but Brees overall is the steadier I think, when he has a good O line....because the guy can't move that well, and the years where he really struggled, SD's O line was porous........I think Brees has matured and could be a great QB in the right situation......but doubt that NO is that situation.....Culpepper has struggled badly past 2 seasons, and has trouble with changes........just depends on how he adjusts and "matures" from this point. He could be devestating if he gets on track (that one year he was one of the top 2 QB's in the league stats wise....I remember it well because I had him in a fantasy FB league......the guy was unreal that year.....If that Dante "comes back" in Miami.....we are going to have our work cut out for us..........Chambers, McMichael, Booker, .....sure they will pick up some more WR's........going to be interesting....

I think the odds of Dante Culpepper being mobile coming off major reconstructive knee surgery are slim and none. I'm thinking he'll look like Drew Bledsoe in the pocket, which could be a recipe for disaster with the Dolphins O-line woes.

Honestly that is exactly what you could say about a Pennington vs. Brady comparison. Obviously, you know who I'd rather have.

Has it ever occurred to you that Saban has better information than we do? Not to mentiion better judgement.
