Hobson is misplaced at OLB for the Jets. He is a solid player, a good tackler and better suited for ILB at 6'0'' 252 lbs. He is familar with the 3-4 system, used to fighting off blockers. At 27 years old, he is in his prime and his contract is up at year's end, I believe. I would like to see the Pats sign him and put him at ILB next year. I doubt he would command big money and he does have a connection with Brady as a Michigan alum. 3-4 ILBs are hard to find. Hobson seems like a solid candidate, combining stoutness, experience, and youth compared with our current crop.

Is he restricted or unrestricted next year? How much of a pick would we give up if he's restricted?

i want Karlos Dansby inside or out. hes been having a monster year this season but he got hurt recently but Arizona is trying hard to keep him.

I aggree that Dansby is having a great year, and I thought he was a great player coming out of Auburn. I have a few questions about him though. Do you think he's strong enough to take on and shed guards at the point of attack? No doubt on his acceleration, pass coverage and persuit skills, but I wonder if he is strong enough to fit inside in the Belichick scheme (ie run through not around blocks). Any thoughts on this?

I agree 100%. Hobson is a guy on my short list of players I'd love to see in a Pats uni.

I think he'd thrive as an ILB in the Pats system.

The FO will get a very good feel for his fit with NE because of Arizona's switch to a 3-4. I would think at hize size (6'3, 250) he would be able to play at least one of the two ILB spots. As usual it will come down to value and where to spend money, if Moss is signed that takes $$, Samuel or some otehr CB may take some $$, not a lot left for ILB. You would expect an ILB and a CB with 2 of the 4 Day 1 picks, so get ready for OG and Punter...

which one of them is best at pass coverage? its wut we need most rit now...

Very few things would make me happier than landing a young ILB and F-ing the jets in the process. And if anyone thinks BB won't be waging all-out WAR against Mangini in FA - provided it's a player he feels can be helpful, obviously - is naive.

true, i dont think hell do anything stupid...but if we WANT someone, the JETS wont be getting him/keeping him...who doesnt wanna leave that place anywayz

i think he is. hes currently in a 3-4 Arizona D and they are playing much better than they have in the past

they are 16th against run while playing some good runners. 16th isnt good/great but its a huge improvement from their past

44 tackles, 6 stuffs, 2.5 sacks. hes pretty big..6"4 250. i think hes strong enough

hes a big hitter..wrap up tackler. hes very good. when he came into NFL his question was upper body strength/shedding blockers but i think hes improved a lot and theres a reason Cardinals want him back so bad

hes a legit 4.5 guy. few young guys i want are him and DJ Williams to play in our 3-4

Thanks for the insight. I haven't gotten to watch a lot of tape on him this season, just highlight stuff.

DJ Williams

And judging by your avatar, that was completely impartial, right?

Without being too nitpicky, just trying to take advantage of a good resource, have you gotten a good gauge on his hip fluidity? I haven't gotten to see how well he uses his hips in coverage. I think this is paramount in considering new linebackers for this 3-4.

umm..yea...how are his hips :bricks:

Unrestricted, easily. He's in his 5th season.

So its Hobson's choice, then. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

He may be a good fit for this D, but it seems that every time we think we understand what BB will do at LB, we are stymied. For 3 years now, I have watched the draft, hoping that we draft a good one. For 3 years now, I have been denied.

And back to football Jeopardy.

ALP: Yes, Alex, I'll take vital linebacker skills for 100, please.
Alex: This is the single most important atribute for a defensive player to have while playing in space.
ALP: What is chest strength?
Alex: Oooh, I'm sorry, the answer is strong and fluid hips. Strong and fluid hips.

Wait, wait....not gonna be a jerk, here. Instead, I shall teach, Glasshoppah. Explosion and flexability in the hips often dictate how powerful and agile a defensive player is. While in a standard broken-down position, a defender has their legs in a z-shape with their torso angled over their feet. This keeps their center of gravity low and their momentum moving foreward. When the player decides to either a) crash a gap, b) scrape and fill, c) drop into coverage or d) read and engage a back in man coverage...their hips dictate how effectively the player is going to move. A drill every linebacker is taught in pop warner is a drill in which they read pass off of the linemen, flip their hips 90 degrees with their inside shoulder facing the QB and drop 3-7 steps into a hook to flat zone. This is the most basic coverage look a linebacker can give. Every coverage is predicated upon this basic function. Watch the game on sunday and pay attention to how the players (from backers to corners) use their hips to stay square to the offensive player or LOS.

When a defender decides to engage the ball carrier, they break down into the basic tackling form. Again, z in the legs, torso leaning foreward. The player is then taught to explode (STARTING....WITH....THE....HIPS) through the ball carrier while wrapping up and proceed to leg-drive until the play is finished. That's why you see little guys delivering devestating hits to players 40-80 pounds their senior. These guys can hang-clean with the best of them. Educate yoself, foo!

well hes my top 3 favorite LB in NFL but Miami Canes homer aside..hes a beast. size..speed. hed be great here in the spot where Bruschi plays (weakside)

Hobson is allright. He's horrible in space, pretty solid between the tackles. He's not a fluid player, not a good open field tackler. I think he would best suited as a jack of all trades linebacker, first guy off the bench. He brings some assets to the table, but nothing to write home about.

Maybe he needs a good coach. :singing:
