UDFA Gary Guyton signed by Pats

So is the report that he signed with San Fran false then I would assume. I don't know, only 15 bench press reps isn't gonna cut it as an inside LB in 3-4. But then again, he's probably just another body for TC.

The few GT games I've watched he has appeared to have limited coverage skills, which seems to be validated by his slow 3-cone time. However, guys have been able to overcome a lack of athleticism before so we will see if he can do the same.

However, this hit was quite impressive:

Given the 40 and the jumps, athleticism is not the issue but maybe intelligence and consistent effort are. Also maybe he is too upright-- cone drills favor low center of gravity guys.

It would be interesting to translate that speed to special teams, with that size, making hits like the one linked above.

So now we have about 15 LBs. Think that if many of these guys are stellar that they part ways with Seau, Alexander, Izzo, or even Bruschi?

How many LBs did we carry last year?

Woods>Izzo>Alexander. I would only be disappointed to see Woods sent packing as I like his upside.

According to the Combine Player profile he "lacks eye-popping athleticism." How can he lack athleticism if he was first among LBs at the combine in the 40, vertical jump and the broad jump.

As for the 3 cone drill, Wheeler did worse and was drafted in the 3rd round by the Colts.

He seems like he could be another good special teams guy.

The depth at LB is great now especially if Seau signs back. Does everyone remember 2 years ago when we were pulling people out of retirement to play?

Guyton looks like a safety in a LBs body. How about moving him to safety? He's not so good in coverage, but he could play a in the box safety like Rodney did last year.

Seems to me that if he truly could only play half of the requirements of a SS, the team would much rather find a guy who had some versatility to offer. As has been said in this thread, possibly we're seeing a solid ST's contributer.

Upper body strength is certainly something that can be trained (15 reps), if that's his biggest problem then maybe he'll be able to compete for a roster spot. He's 6'2" 245--good size already, hopefully he can get stronger.

I'm very surprized this guy didn't go drafted. With the "stats" he had at the combine and the way some teams love the "stats" guys! I'm not saying that "stats" make a football player, just saying some people/teams seem to go crazy over "stats".

40-yard dash -- 4.47 (1st among LBs)
Vertical jump -- 36.5 (1st among LBs)
Broad jump -- 10"6'' (tied-1st among LBs)
3-cone drill -- 7.07, (tied-8th)
60-yard shuttle -- 11.57 (5th)

I like this signing a lot. He seems to have a lot of upside. Hopefully he can stick on with STs.

He actually had a 40" vertical at his Pro Day, which is more accurate, since they didn't set the vertical jump test up correctly at the Combine.

As for the new additions at LB, and some of the LB's who have been on the back end of the roster. I don't believe Alexander's ever going to amount to anything in the NFL, and I would like to see one of these guys beat him out. Izzo's always been a special teams ace, but I don't think he's their best special teamer anymore, either. Hopefully they'll carry at least one or two more LB's this year, and I remember when the team used to carry 11-12 LB's.

I wonder if he slipped in the 3 cone because his Pro Day was a significant improvement.
