Analytics-based mock draft: Quinnen Williams to Cards; QBs fall

This draft, no trades allowed, uses analytics with one goal in mind: "maximize each team's potential to win as many games as possible in 2019."

    To show you what happens:

    1. ARI: DT Q. Williams
    2. SF: CB D. Baker
    3. NYJ: Edge N. Bosa [!#$#$ that]
    4. OAK: Edge J. Allen
    5. TB: LB D. White

So, who do the Pats get?
    32. NE: QB D. Haskins
If you think I'm suggesting Tom Brady isn't playing, think again. Backup quarterbacks are underrated. Consider that 16 teams -- half of the NFL -- used multiple quarterbacks last season. Also, I've been tracking teams who have starter-level backups and strong development plans for future starters, and they win more games. Non-starters who have similar play-style profiles to the starters also have greater rates of success, and in this sense, the pocket-passing Haskins fits. [For the record, he's the second QB off the board; Kyler Murray goes to MIA.]

    56. NE: WR H. Butler
    64. NE: WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside

Moving the Chains hosts Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan do a 2-round draft, with some trades, with each one using one big board for all of his picks. Pat Kirwan made all the selections for NE.

    1. ARI: QB K. Murray
    2. SF: Edge N. Bosa
    3. NYJ: Edge J. Allen
    4. OAK: DT Q. Williams
    5. TB: LB D. White

    32. NE: QB D. Jones
    56. NE: DE Z. Allen
    64. NE: TE J. Sternberger

Interesting premise. Thanks for the link.

I'd actually love that first draft. In the right situation, Haskins is going to be very good. Butler and JJAW would give us athleticism, size, and awesome ball skills.

As for the second one: I do not like Jones very much. Allen and Sternberger get a thumbs up, at least. I think we can do better, however.

In the bizarro world where Haskins is available at #32: yes please.

In the real world where Jones is available at #32: no thank you.

In the scenario where Haskins falls that far I find it hard to believe somebody doesn't trade up ahead of the Pats to draft Haskins. If Fant was still on the board and the Pats past on him even to take Haskins which is probably the right move I'd die. If anything I wouldn't have an issue using the two seconds to take up and take Haskins and Fant.

Also in this draft the Giants getting Gary and Lawrence is quite the defensive transformation.

I'm amazed at those who would draft Jones and not trade the same pick for Rosen.

As I noted, that draft explicitly ruled out trades. That said, the idea here was that each team is making the "optimal pick" at their draft slot. Somehow, MIA is the only other team for which QB is the optimal pick.
