Training Camp Thread 8/14/2013

Comments from Roy Cummings, Tampa Tribune:

- The Bucs flew to New England this week hoping for a more challenging practice atmosphere. Tom Brady delivered: Bucs learn important lessons vs. Brady, Pats | Tampa Bay Online and The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com

- The Bucs are anxious to see CB Darrelle Revis in game action but no decision has been made on when he will play: Bucs notes: Revis might play in third preseason game | Tampa Bay Online and The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com

- The only NFL coach who likes Rutgers players more than Greg Schiano is Bill Belichick. Read more here: Bucs hot reads: Combined practices have Rutgers feel | Tampa Bay Online and The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com

- The Bucs have taken the field for their second day of joint workouts with the Patriots.

- Bucs and Pats are going through fundamental drills now with a live version of Bruce Springsteen's Be True playing in the background.

- One Buc player who has really fared well in these joint workouts so far is CB Anthony Gaitor. Getting his hands in a lot of balls.

- Bucs WR Mike Williams just walked off the field with the team doctor. Didn't seem to be favoring anything. Will continue to monitor.

- Bucs and Pats are conducting one-on-one passing drills. Bucs DBs getting their hands on a lot more balls today.

- Gusty winds are making punt return drills an adventure. This is just what the likes of Eric Page need, though.

- By the way it's 73 degrees, sunny and a brisk cool breeze is blowing through Foxborough today. In other words: just like home - in January.

- Crowd here go all worked up as Bucs DB and some Patriot fell to the ground together during a punt block this is what passes for excitement.

- (Q.: Heard a little scrap just broke out.. Any details?) -- Mike Adams blocked to ground during punt drill no big deal.

- Bucs WR Mike Williams has returned to the sidelines. Looks like he's good to go.

- Mike Williams back on the field in 11-on-11 work.

- Patriots QB Tom Brady has not returned to the field since he grabbed his left knee. Ryan Mallett running the offense.

- Meanwhile, over in the Bucs side of the ball, DE Da'Quan Bowers is only working third downs in latest 11-on-11 drill.

- Latest 11-on-11 drill ends badly for Bucs as CB Logan Ryan picks off Josh Freeman and returns ball 70 yards for TD.

- Teams are now in a hurry up drill and Da'Quan Bowes is on the field for all downs so far.

- The most effective QB wearing the number 5 out here today has been Tim Tebow. By a mile. Not a good day for Josh Freeman.

- Viewing a fan video, it looks like Brady got rolled up on when DE Adrian Clayborn pushed Nate Solder into him. Brady clearly in some pain.

Don't overreact: Brady grabbed left knee, hobbled for moment, returned for a few reps, then left with the trainer. Looks ok, team precaution

Havens is a fan boy. Of course he would say that, he doesn't know if it's a team precaution or an actual injury.

- The Pats finished their offensive series in 11 v 11. The Bucs take over and the first play is a pick by Talib.

Wonder if he was covering the supposedly unrecoverable (by some around here) Vincent Jackson.

I feel like there should be an exception to the Belichick stonewall approach when it comes to potentially serious injury information concerning Brady

Maybe, but per Bedard, the Patriots top trainer/medical guy is still on the field (not with Brady) and doesn't appear concerned.

About time Ryan Mallet earn his pay check!

Comments from Steve Balestrieri, Pats Pub:

- Huge crowds rolling in for joint practice today.

- Bucs have a spirited warm-up ..pretty cool

- Mesko fumbled snap for a punt ...

- Tampa just blocked an Allen punt

- Bucs are roughing up the gunners

- Sudfeld with a nice grab in the end zone

- Talib and Cole with great plays on defense

- Brady left field, went inside the bubble

- Logan Ryan with a pick six

Logan Ryan just got a pick 6 against Josh Freeman as well.

He said berj was, where did he say the top trainer is?

I think both CB's Logan Ryan and Marques Cole are having good camps. Gives us Good Dept at CB.

Comments from Greg Bedard, Sports Illustrated:

- Limbering up at Gillette

- Tom Brady just grabbed his left knee, limped off, now has returned to cheers

- Brady keeps looking down at it. Doesn't look comfortable. Now stretching it on the side

- Brady doesn't appear to be wearing a brace on that knee, the same one that ended his 2008 season. He's back in now

- Brady leaving practice after conferring with Belichick and McDaniels. Wise move.

- For what it's worth, Berj Najarian, Belichick's right-hand man, doesn't look concerned, hasn't left field.

Najarian is not a trainer. He's more like Belichick's right hand man.

Comments from Stephen Holder, Tampa Bay Times:

- Fighting to make Patriots roster, LeGarrette Blount reunites with Bucs Fighting to make Patriots' roster, LeGarrette Blount reunites with Bucs | Tampa Bay Times

- Random observation from earlier: Watching Tom Brady in practice today was an experience for someone who doesn't see him daily. WOW

- He's always accurate, but until you've seen him in 7 on 7 with little or no pass rush, you have no idea. Lasers all day...

- If I was a WR, I might PAY the Patriots to play with that guy. Unreal

- Here's a taste of what we saw on the field today in Foxborough.... Highlights from Day 1 of Bucs-Patriots Highlights from Day 1 of Bucs-Patriots | Tampa Bay Times

- Rutgers reunion between Bucs, Patriots Rutgers reunion between Bucs, Patriots | Tampa Bay Times

- A little fracas broke out here at Bucs-Patriots practice but quickly put to an end. Hard to determine who involved from our vantage point.

- Schiano and Belichick agreed that would not be tolerated and those involved won't finish the practice.

- Little bit of a scare here at Patriots practice as Tom Brady stayed down after incomplete pass in 11-on-11 drills. Was holding left knee.

- Brady just went to locker room bc of the knee. My question: will Belichick ever talk to Schiano again if Brady's really hurt?

- (Q.: They allow them to hit QB's in practice?") -- No. It looked inadvertent, like someone fell into the knee. Not sure.

- (Q.: I thought QB’s were off limits during these practices?? Did he take an unintentional hit??) -- Yes and yes. There was no intent. Not even clear who hit him. It was a pileup.

- Brady exits, enter Tim Tebow... throws nice ball to Edelman in back of end zone for TD. Can't make this up.

More comments from Derek Havens:

- Brady just fell to the ground and grabbed his knee after a throw. He laid on the field for a few minutes, but walks it off. Looks ok.

- Brady appears to be fine, keeps looking at knee. He is back under center for 11-on-11's. #Patriots fans cheered when he walked back on field.

- Tom Brady just walked into the practice bubble with the trainer. He returned to the field, but kept looking at his left knee. Seems to be ok.

- Don't overreact: Brady grabbed left knee, hobbled for moment, returned for a few reps, then left with the trainer. Looks ok, team precaution.

- Ryan Mallett running first-team offense. Teams blasting music again as "crowd noise". This, & hurry up, are when rookies have struggled most.

- Is it a good Brady isn't finishing practice? No. But TB went w/ trainer as precaution. (Maybe ice?). Caserio & Belichick still on the field.

- Tebow just threw a beautiful TD pass to Julian Edelman, who made a diving catch in the end zone. Great play by both.

Logan Ryan has looked so pathetic that even Marquise Cole has taken over his spot in the depth chart, if that tells you anything...

I would not say that "we have good depth at CB" with these 2 players.
