Elliss was not good last year. He was flashing at times, but missed the running lane more often than not. Let's hope he improves this year.
I tend to be overly critical of bad Patriot play.

A less critical view of Ellis is that he has physical attributes and can make plays, but doesn’t have the vision and instincts a LB should and it causes a lot of bad plays.
As a LB making a play now and then but misreading and being out of position frequently is not good. They can all make a play, but consistency and doing what you are supposed to at LB is the glue of a defense.

Chism will never make it to the practice squad. If they release him he’s gone. They were in a bidding war with 6 teams to get him to sign here.
You understand that wanting a guy as one of your dozen undrafted free agents to go in your 90 man roster and cutting a player who made your team to pick up a guy you didn’t feel was worth drafting are 2 very different things right?

Very, very few UDFA rookies get claim at cutdown.

Look it up for yourself, I’m not the google machine.
No. You stated there was a 6 Team “bidding war”, I only asked you to link facts. It’s called credibility.

Bottom line on Chism is the preseason will tell us, and other teams a lot more. He needs to take advantage of those opportunities, as I imagine he will play a lot, and because he will be a safety valve, get open quick slot guy, I imagine he will have plenty of targets in the 3 games. He was a sought after UDFA, so those interested teams aren't just going to forget about him. If he has a couple of noteworthy plays, I believe he will be hard to sneak through to the PS.

I don’t think 80 plays against future UPS package delivery men really moves the needle for teams.
There isn’t a great deal of scouting of second halves or preseason games, but more importantly every player in any camp can make plays. It’s not eye opening if a guy catches 3 passes and even less so when it’s against guys who won’t be in the league.
I think we severely overrate getting noticed in preseason games.

WTF DOES THAT MEAN? SERIOUSLY?

JFC, some of you guys complain JUST to complain.
I don't get it, I've NEVER got it.

Bah
You will never get it if you don't watch Elliss repeatedly shoot the wrong rushing lane in 2024 leading to 30+ running plays in a row. If you watch Elliss' 2024 performance maybe you will get it.

Speaking of high motor not equating to success, it's disappointing to see Keion White still be referred to as "erratic" this camp. I want to believe the potential is still there...
This is an objective and brilliant post. The only way to improve this post is to additionally comment on the disappointment called Mapu. We will see but White and Mapu are on the clock. For reference, Barmore is not on the clock.

I agree. Maybe if Spillane can help Elliss, he will be good.

If the 2025 Patriots are healthy and well schemed all their great or good players will level up production. Players that posters and media members told us weren’t good will have egg on their faces. Weeks ago I had people telling me Pop Douglas needed Chism to replace him or he wasn’t good enough… foolish.

I think the common denominator here is Ellis's career: 6 different signings since entering the league in 2021. Vikings, Eagles, Niners, Eagles again in extremely small usage, released every time.

I'm hoping he's just very picky and this place is the perfect fit because all of those teams have solid organizations that grow and develop defensive personnel quite well.

Look at Baun as an example. Role player special teamer for 4 years in NO. Signs a one year 3.5M deal with the eagles, then becomes a first team all pro. Now I suppose a couple people in this thread will say they knew Baun was destined to be an all pro, ahhh no. Right place, right time, right team, right opportunity. That's a lot to go right, but it can happen.

I just think about the hardest thing to do on a football field is develop instincts, especially at LB. But at an NFL level with coaching and teammates who get it I suppose the odds are better.

No one is complaining to complain, we are evaluating players based upon what they have done on the field and you disagree not because you have evaluated and see it differently but because you don’t like the evaluation so you disagree with it.
Look at the film. First understand what a LB is supposed to do, then watch Elliss play last year and be honest about what you see.

When your eyes are shut and you ***** about what people with their eyes open see, you waste your breath.

No one says anything like that here, lame of you to suggest it.

Players improve. Players are better fits in certain systems. But the ones that go from not very good to very good are outnumbered exponentially by the ones that don’t. For every Baun there are 50 like him that never progress.

The odds against Ellis’s are long. He’s been cut half a dozen times, his film last great is that of a lb without lb instincts.
His upside is he is physically gifted and teams keep taking a chance on him but a LB with bad film on a terrible defense isn’t usually where you find breakouts.
I hope I’m wrong, but the film doesn’t lie.

I am really rooting for "I am Effin so hard I'm about to shoot Chism"

Where are you getting this from?

NFL Pro scouts attend other teams pre-season games, and watch tape afterwards of every play. You think they leave after the first half?
