Tony Eason's son no. 7 rated recruit in country signs with Georgia

I liked Tony Eason. He helped take us to a SB. His 1986 was every bit as good as Elway's and we ended up losing a close game in the AFC Divisional round to the Broncos.
To be honest...that's nothing to scoff at.

In the era of Brady, everyone probably wants to keep Eason a long distance memory, but he did get us to our first SB Of course, Grogan had to take over because Eason was getting killed--but in any case, it was neat to see that Eason's son, an impressive qb specimen at 6'6 220, is no. 7 in the country and will playing for Georgia.
The way things are going, who knows, maybe he'll be the one to lead the next generation after brady , even though I do personally hope we are able to hold on to Jimmy G.

I was a fresh 21 and acting like it. It's crazy to think how different the atmosphere was then compared to now. Bunch of yahoo's.

I ran into Grogan years ago as he was entering the Hilltop Steak House and I was leaving. We passed by each other in that long narrow hallway in front by the fake cows. I can't remember the year, but it was right after I heard that Eason was taking over as the starter at QB. I said a quick hello to him and although he was clearly unhappy he gave me a hello back.

Actually Eason went on to have a very good career working as a model for police outline chalk drawings.

The for some strange reason in the first few drives vs the Bears in the Super Bowl Berry went away from what got them there and decided to put the ball in Eason's hand with with 7 pass plays on first 8 offensive plays. 5 incomplete passes, 2 sacks with one being a strip sack and one Craig James run.

The for some strange reason in the first few drives vs the Bears in the Super Bowl Berry went away from what got them there and decided to put the ball in Eason's hand with with 7 pass plays on first 8 offensive plays. 5 incomplete passes, 2 sacks with one being a strip sack and one Craig James run.

There was no chance in hell the Pats were running the ball effectively vs that Bears front 7 + Duarson as the SS.

The only chance they had was to complete some passes down the field and get Wilson, Marshall and Singletary dropping into coverage. The 85 Bears had ok cover guys- not great ones.

The sad truth is that if Brady in his prime was Qb that day it wouldn't have mattered. The Pats 85 line was very good at run blocking but not a great pass blocking on.

Berry gambled....and lost.

To this day I have never seen a front 7 create so much presser on a Qb as that 85 Bears D.

my feeling is due to the right expectations the franchise and fans had on a 1st round pick like Tony Eason what he was able to accomplish was lower that expected

howewer he playied imho a couple of very good seasons

could have been better his staying in Foxboro ? sure

he had a lot of talent for sure

imho still one of the top 5 qb we ever had but we have to consider that 'only Brady and Bledose' took care of the franchise for 22 years

I remember reading that they decided to try and do what the Dolphins did and spread them out, like 5 wide before its time.... That was how the Dolphins beat them. The 4 6 Bears D was designed to stifle the run completely, which even in the mid 80s was still your primary defensive goal. So Pats intentionally tried to pass. Running probably would not have helped, but they likely would not have got blown as nearly as bad.

You may laugh at this, but Eason was a very accurate QB who rarely threw the ball up for grabs in an effort to "make plays." He probably would accel in the right system of short accurate passing.
Grogan was the gunslinger who would run, take hits, take chances to make plays. He turned it over more.
If the tuck rule/snow bowl game was a loss, we could have a similar conversation about Bledsoe vs Brady in February 2002.
I am not saying Eason was going to be Brady, but they share a similar analogy.

Yeah, Brady lacks the turtle move, or the fetal position move, or whatever it was that Eason would do when he got scared.
