Curren says his sources indicate Mankins will be tagged.

He explains the rationale for using the tag now because it will continue to exist under any new CBA because the union is not interested in eliminating it. They may try to earn some brownie points by taking up cases for players who wish to fight it. But regardless of the ruling it will be a moot point. They can't sign with anyone until there is a new CBA and any new CBA will incorporate tags for 2011... In fact the reason for telling teams they can use the tag now is whether they do or not may be the basis for determining who is tagged in 2011 under a new CBA.

Expect Patriots to franchise Mankins

So the tag is meaningless anyway like anything else until this deal is offically done... i say offically done, is because no games will be missed, but this offseason wont be the same ....

I hope he's right, regardless of how pissed Logan will be.

Having Light and Mankins next year will make me feel alot better. Add a guy like Pouncey with one of the first 3 picks and we will dominate :rocker:

What makes anyone think Mankins would report? Isn't it just like the RFA situation, except this time he pretty much knows that he'll be a UFA after regardless of whether he gets another accrued season or not?

The difference is that this year, Mankins will get $11M to show up.

$10.7M reasons to report. That is about as much as he has made in his first 6 years here. And he will turn 30 in March of 2012... I know the ranch is somehow self supporting...and he still has every nickel he's ever made...but 30 year old guards don't get the kind of $56M UFA mega deal he's been holding out for since 28...

The only question is whether Mankins signs early and guarantees himself $11M or waits until July or August. There is no particular reason not to wait. If the patriots withdraw the tag, he is an UFA and will get much more than $11M (bonus plus salary) to play this year.

I actually feel bad for the guy. The Pats have bent him over with no lube.

At some point, you have to pay the man. If you can reach terms agreeable for both sides, atleast trade him for what you can get. Mankins has more than paid his dues in the league. he deserves to get paid.

It's not like the Pats haven't tried to reach a fair deal. 5 years/ $35 million isn't exactly a slap in the face.

I understand that.

But what im saying, is trade the man this offseason if he is firm on what he wants. Someone will pay it.

When they don't agree to get rid of the RFA season, yes, it is.

I agree with you. I believe like Wilfork, Mankins should be one of, if not the highest paid at his position, but do you think anyone would give up a 1st round pick for him, let alone 2 - 1st rounders?

No, we will let them off easy and take a 1st this year and 2nd next.

I know we don't agree on the existence of a year "0", but I'm still a little confused by the RFA. How much more do you think Mankins could get as a UFA?

I'm not sure what you're talking about...

No. Not at all.

Im just saying that if you cannot reach an agreement with the man, trade him for what you can. Dont hold him hostage. He's been a great Patriot and more than lived up to his part.
