Tom Brady's curse

he's right about him being taken for granted by his own fans -- that's a theme of his career going back to college -- and why it doesn't bother him now.

Actually saw a thread the other day about how Cassel might be "another brady"...wake up folks, nobody has played the position better than he is right now...and he's getting better????!!!!

then again, this never was a football savvy region. we're slowly getting there...just remember, it's not the KICKER...never was!!

Good grief! LOL, that's a total embarrassment. I guess the anonymity of the internet really allows stuff like that, but wow!

forgot to mention a recent poll by Charley Pierce in the globe that had Ortiz beating Tom in a popularity poll....not that it matters but...

A DH ON THE LEVEL OF A QB! :bricks: that's about all you need to know about NE.

While Ortiz' victory surely had a lot to do with Boston's Sox-obsession, there are other factors that make it make sense for Papi to win a popularity contest.

While Brady is an inspiration on the field, and a sheer joy to watch in action, he is significantly less graceful off the field. Don't get me wrong -- he is obviously a man of great drive and personal integrity, but he also comes accross as something of a doofus whenever he opens his mouth.

The guy has some serious trouble with the English language, and he doesn't have Papi's good excuse for it. Brady's major problem is that he starts a sentence and then gets ahead of himself and finishes with a 2nd half of the sentence that doesn't come close to matching the 1st half. I'm sure he's a bright guy, but it makes him sound kind of thick sometimes.

He also seems kind of dull and humorless during interviews. I'm sure this is part of the earnest drive that makes him such a great QB, but his leadership skills don't translate off the field.

Meanwhile, Papi is a loveable goofball, with an obviously keen sense of humor and a wry ironic way about him. He might be half the leader Brady is, but his public persona is much more compelling. The guy is Domican Santa. Add in the fact that Papi plays in a sport that is much more conducive for individual moments of glory, and it seems natural that he would edge out a blander guy who happens to be an even rarer gem of an athlete.

Anyway, I choose to look at Papi's popularity in a "glass half full" sort of way -- in the Boston of my parents' generation, no matter how good at baseball he might be, no matter how many WS's he lead the Sox to, a large black man would NEVER, EVER have been more popular than a good looking Irish kid.

A recent AOL poll revealed that only 42 percent of Americans could name the three branches of Government while 70 percent could name the Three Stooges.

That being said...I don't think Brady looks like a Doof running around with those supermodels...but that's just me.

Gotta remember... the unwashed masses have short memories and Papi has had a storybook season.

Wow. You couldn't have been more wrong about Tommy's off-field demeanor. He is a guy that gets along with everyone, someone who you can't not like. Tommy's always cracking jokes, but is also deceptively smart. He remembers almost everything, and is quite laid back and easygoing. I have never known a more likeable QB nor have I seen someone with the natural ability to lead and get others to believe in him. When he was our QB, we would've followed him off a bridge.

Yeah, that's it. New Englanders find it a bit disconcerting that their QB comes off as a "doofus", and that's why Papi won. It has NOTHING to do with the fact that the Sox are the major obsession of the region, not the Pats.

And you couldn't be more wrong about Brady. This wins the WTF! post of the day as far as I'm concerned.

It extends beyond Boston. Big Papi is one of the biggest personalities in all of baseball, Brady is not that in the NFL. Who cares anyway.

This is exactly what I'm trying to get at.

I'm not in any way attempting to slight Brady's leadership ability, which I have the utmost respect for, or to in any way insinuate what kind of person he is in his off-field private life.

I'm talking about his media persona, which is actually kind of bland. Brady's cartoon square-jawed, earnest, driven to perfection image so closely matches the ideal almost movie-type image for an NFL quarterback that's it's actually not that interesting.

Papi on the other hand comes off mischievous and rakish. Early on he was known as much for his elaborate handshakes and dugout antics as he was for his big hits. He doesn't seem to take anything seriously -- until he stands in the batters box. He's just a more "fun" character than the "perfect quarterback" persona Brady's been saddled with.

And the fact that Brady is as uncomfortable with a microphone in his face as he is comfortable in the pocket doesn't help compared to Ortiz, who joyfully butchers English in his thick Domican accent in his interviews.

No surprise here; the poll is taken during the home playoff run of the baseball season (prob around when the yanks came to town) while the football season hasn't started yet. Most fans will vote on emotion, and when that poll came out baseball was on everyones mind---and papi runs baseball in boston. You take this poll in december and let's see what the results are
