Mike Ditka's not available?

Not for 2012

Obviously. But given Gronk, Hernandez, Fells and Scaife, I can wait until 2013 for Ballard. And, again obviously, so can the Pats.

As I said, I'd take Graham easily over Scaife.

He also said some not-very-nice things about the Patriots while he was in Denver, I doubt he would want to come back and I sure-as-hell wouldn't want him back.

Link?. I don't remember it.

Worst hands ever he couldn't catch cooties at a Justin Beiber concert

Are you cutting Welker?
Also, Fells can back up Gronk, he is more than an oversized WR, more of a typical TE.

I can see keeping 4 true WRs plus Slater, since Hernandez can be considered a WR, or at least take the place of one due to our scheme compared to traditional 1 TE offenses.
Those would be Welker, Lloyd, Gaffney and Branch, since all will be needed on offense.
Edelman would only make team as a special teamer (in any scenario really) so he isn't competing for a WR spot but competing against the group fighting for the last few spots regardless of position.

I don't remember Graham leaving on bad terms either, but some fans think the act of leaving equals bad terms.

Graham didn't leave on bad terms. He left after the team indicated it badly wanted to retain him, although not badly enough to do something foolish like Shanny did. Graham wanted to be a receiving TE. He wasn't really keen on his use here. Felt being primarily a blocking TE limited his value and potentially his career (injury). They were never going to pay him remotely what he wanted because they didn't see him as that complete TE, but they elected/appointed him a captain in season to try and impress on him that he was valued here.

Aside from the fact that he will be 34 in November, his thorough grasp of the system would seem to make him an ideal fit if they are really looking for a 4th TE. Hard to tell with the injuries they are dealing with with Gronk and Fells if that is what they are thinking or if Sciafe et all are just here through camp to insure we can run the 2TE stuff from a personnel standpoint.

Meh. Graham will be 34 this year. He was never a receiving tight end, but he had all of 2 receptions for 25 yards in 2011, and 18 for 148 yards in 2010. I don't think he's going to be an Alge Crumpler kind of presence as a blocker and team leader. I'm not particularly high on Scaife, but I don't see the need to replace him with another guy who is likely to get cut. It's 6 of one vs. half dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned.

Another guy made to look better than he is by a great quarterback and organization.

Except he was known as a blocking TE. The QB had little to do with it

OOOPS that was a major omission by me. But we differ again on Edelman/Branch....and probably will continue to do so, right up until September.

And maybe beyond.....

Graham was the best blocking TE in the NFL when he was here. I doubt he has lost that ability. Scaife is a below average blocker.
Neither is going to see many passes come their way if they make the team.

Neither is likely to see the game day roster, either.

I'm not excited by Scaife. But I'm not excited by 33+ year old Dan Graham at this stage of his career, either. Apparently you are.

Since neither is going to get many catches, but Graham is a much better blocker, I think that would be him the superior option.

Well you never know, but with roster spots at a minimum and the possibility of carrying 4 TE's looming as, at least. a reasonable possibility, it could wind up as a decision between Branch and Edelman on who is the last receiver kept.

Hey maybe we are both wrong and the keep them both and Slater gets the hook. At any rate who knows, injuries could be the final decider.

Graham and Scaif are about as different as Gronk and Hernandez. If both were on the roster the choice would have to be made as to which skills the Pats desire more, the receiving skills of Scaif, or the blocking ones Graham.

I think right now they'd value the receiving skills and Graham isn't going to get a call. Based on years past, the Pats are comfortable working in one of their OTs as a blocking TE, so it would be easier to replace that skill than a receiver's
