Stopped by & caught the last hr of practice today, mostly to watch the QBs, For what it’s worth, here are my observations.
Most of the snaps were redzone, either 7 v 7 or 11 v 11. All 4 QBs got snaps.
- Maye looked pretty good to me. He shows command at the line of scrimmage and appears to be audibling into better plays. He had a really nice off platform throw on 7 v 7 over the middle, throwing his receiver open.
- In 11 v 11, Maye had 4 snaps. 2 running plays. A play where he appeared to audible to a play where Henry was wide open in the flat with blockers ahead. Really encouraging. Then on the next snap, he had pressure from his left, got happy feet and threw the ball into the ground towards a well covered receiver. So in back to back snaps, you could see the potential & the challenges he’s likely to flash this year.
- Jacoby is an obvious team leader. Constantly congratulating the other QBs after they make good plays. He’s exactly the guy you want here with Maye.
- The offense, to me, didn’t look any different with Jacoby or Maye. Just based on today, Maye isn’t that far off.
- Milton has the physical skills of the Greek God of Quaterbacking. Only had 5 snaps in 7 v 7, but my god, what an arm. Threw lazers into both corners of the end zone for touchdowns, threw another TD over the middle. There was a running play and he did throw one ball into coverage. He was going against the 3’s, but it was impressive.
- Zappe had some 11 v 11 snaps and the difference is arm strength was eye opening. After watching a full practice of 3 QBs throwing the ball on a line, every pass from Zappe looked like a pop fly. Mac had similar arm strength & I still can’t believe we went through a full season of that.
- The Barmore news sucks. And i have my doubts about Mayo. But there is going to be a dramatic difference in QB play from last year to this. We’re going to go from having well below average QB play to average and the difference is going to be significant.
- The Pats suddenly have a pretty good QB situation. Zappe is going to be gone. Brissett is a competent QB & a great leader. Maye has the potential to be a Top 10 QB in this league & Milton is an optimal developmental prospect. I’m feeling much better about this franchise.
