Hard to believe that the new talent brought in is so good that
they let this young experienced defender go. Globe stats say
he was in on "34.1 percent of the Patriots’ snaps". Why not compete
with the new talent?

There must be some other reason. What did Bill say?

Because on his best days he wasn't a massive liability and is fifth on the depth chart and he either did something stupid (very possible given his history) or they were just trying to do him a favor and give him a chance to latch on to another team.
