At this moment, we do not have any dynasties in professional sports for the reasons you cite.

Sorry I disagree. Just because times are different does not mean the standards should be lowered.

Winning one Super Bowl over 12 years is not a dynasty.

A dynasty is when you win championships again and again and there is a clear pattern of winning championships with regularity.

Era of Excellence is a better term to describe 05-16 Patriots.

Then you won't see any more dynasties. In any league sports.

Well, I suppose you might since you consider such short runs to qualify.

That definition is too harsh. For one thing, it pretty much entirely rules out modern sports which are /designed/ to promote parity. For another, it makes it almost impossible to put together a long enough run to really fit the term 'dynasty'. A dynasty is not 4 or 5 years. What /should/ be instructive is performance versus the rest of the league you're playing in during the time your playing. Given the realities of the salary cap era, the Patriots performance is so far beyond what ANY other team in the league has been able to do during the same period that the only term that does it justice is dynasty.
I don't think there's really a right or wrong way to define what a dynasty is. I just think the turnover is too large to really consider 2014 part of the 3 out of 4 teams in my opinion.

It is what it is then but I might be a little more optimistic than you.

If the Pats win back to back titles they are a dynasty
If the SF Giants win the next 2 WS they are a dynasty
If the Warriors or Cavs win the next 2-3 titles they are a dynasty
I guess if the Blackhawks or Kings win 3 of the next 6 then there is a discussion.

Like I said I'm tough on calling teams dynasties. Its a super high standard and it should be. It separates the teams that "had a good run" or "won a couple of titles" from "Won titles over an extended period of time"

On another note, do you guys still consider us in the dynasty now? I consider 2010-now a new era seperate from the 3 outta 4 years.
A lot of people consider the 1981-1995 years, the years of the 49ers Dynasty, so why not. Doesn't the word Dynasty basically mean a certain amount of years ruling something ? 15 continuous years of winning football can be considered one dynasty, with 2 rulers, Belichick and Brady.

Looking back on Belichick's resignation from the Jets, one of the funniest things now has got to be the president of the Jets suggesting that Belichick was crazy for quitting. I think he said that BB was "in turmoil".

There are 2 categories of nfl dynasties: short-term and long-term. There are 5 generally-accepted short-term nfl dynasties: 60's packers, 70's Steelers, 80's Niners, 90's Cowboys and 2001-2004 Patriots. The Patriots and Cowboys are the ONLY nfl teams to win 3 SBs in 4 yrs but the Patriots is considered superior, since it was done totally in the fa and salary-cap eras. Youd have to rate the Cowboys 2nd, as theirs was partially in fa and salary-cap. Id put the Steelers 3rd-they won 4 in 6 years-not sure if thats as good as 3 in 4,or better-but even if it is-no fa, no salary cap and entire team was roided up-at a time it was pretty much unregulated. So no matter how you slice it, Pats 01-04 is the most impressive dynasty in nfl history.

But there IS something to be said about the long-term-theres really only 2 teams-The 80s-90s Niners and 2001-2016 Patriots(and still counting). No other teams have come close to long , continued excellence for that kind of stretch. The Patriots is again, more impressive-Niners were not in salary-cap era. Even Steve Young and Joe Montana have said this.

Now what this long, awesome run will look like by the time TB retires some time after 2020-will be REALLY something.

I'm agreeing to disagree. See, you say it's a super high standard. But by /my/ standards, making 3 out of 4 a dynasty is a low standard. I think /my/ standard is high. Witness no one else in the NFL coming /close/ to duplicating what the Pats have done. There's too much chance involved in actually winning that one game at the end of the season. Does anyone seriously think the 07 Giants were a better team than the 07 Pats? But 16 years doesn't lie.

Thats cool.

I bet Yankees and Canadians fans from the 60s LOLd when people started calling the 01-04 Pats a dynasty and thats fine. I'm not sure winning 3 of 4 SBs is a low standard but I get what you are saying.

To me, a "Dynasty" implies that there's turnover, it's not the efforts of a single group of mostly the same guys. A "Dynasty" in royal terms refers to a clan/family taking over the throne and holding it for many generations while expanding the territory and wealth of the Kingdom. A sports "Dynasty" manages to maintain a level of excellence while winning championships on a regular basis and turning over significant parts of their roster. While BB and TB12 have been the constants in this Dynasty, there's been plenty of turnover on the team and the coaching staff from 2004 to the point that they're really the only two who have been there the whole time doing the key things they do. While they've only won one SB since 2004, they've been in three and won numerous AFC championships as well as winning the AFC East pretty much every year save one.

By my reckoning, the 49ers and ourselves are the ONLY true dynasties in the NFL since they did it over a long period of time with multiple championships and roster turnover.

Does anyone know what happened to thst napkin?

It really belongs in Canton.
Not that you didn't know... but that's not actually *the* napkin. It was just a prop for some documentary on Belichick IIRC.

Second Dynasty? Why not? And when this one has run its course next decade can be labeled the Third Dynasty.

How long would it last? It's not near as durable as the Declaration of Independance, and it's sealed in helium.

And here is the moment itself, squiggy video and all:

Does anybody know where to find the full video of the press conference? It must surely exist, as it's constantly excerpted (in higher quality than this) in various documentaries. I would really love to see the thing in all its glory.

It's hard to find anything almost 17 years old on the Internet nowadays. Only thing I can suggest is archive.org which is always a crapshoot. Even in this video (which is hilarious and also on the subject of this thread) they use an audio version of the PC.

EDIT: Found anothet hilarious vid of Jets fams/media wishing for what might have been. What fun!

Not to argue, but the Packers won 5 titles in 7 years including 3 in a row. Although only 2 were in the SB era. I realize that it was before FA/Salary Cap, which means a lot. IMO the greatest Dynasty ever was the late 50's - 60's Celtics. All the others are in the discussion after that. As far as just football goes, looking purely at the numbers, the Packers have to be considered ahead of the Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers, etc. The only team that compares is the Browns (5 in a row, but 4 were in the AAFC)
