What we saw last night was not a battle against AFC heavy weights. It was not a rematch of last year's AFC playoff game. It was not an experienced team against a young team. It was not a battle of wits between a defensive mastermind and an offensive one.
What we saw was simply this: On a week that saw their coach an object of an almost unprecedented firestorm of hate and shame and ridicule; a week that had to be as low as winning a superbowl is high, this team went out and did the best thing they could do for their coach - they played their hearts out for him.
We have seen this coach reviled as "standoffish" and "somber" at best and "arrogant" and "evil" at worst. At least that's what all-powerful media wants us to believe. Certainly he has perpetrated perhaps the worst "sin" in their eyes - he does not kow-tow to the media.
But what of the evidence that is right before our eyes ? What kind of man ellicits the overwhelming effort far that we witnessed last night ? What kind of man is so committed to the idea of excellence that it's light is reflected in the faces and words of men like Brady and Bruschi and Colvin and Seau ? I'll tell you. A man that is as committed to his team as they are to him. Which leads us to this simple truth.
They love their coach.
