BB likes to draft corners in the 2nd-3rd round. I expect him to do so again. (He also likes WRs there too)
I am not at all ready to stand pat with our secondary.

Consider this:

Corner
Samuel
Hobbs

Gay injured again
Scott injured again, both were last year

Poteat shouldnt be on the field except on sts or the dime.

Troy Brown will be playing D again, and we will be plucking corners off the street.

With Harrison and Scott part of the S mix, there is injury risk there too. Harrison is coming off a severe injury, and Scott has never been healthy.

I expect a veteran corner signed. And I expect a corner drafted on day 1.

Then I will feel better.
Some of our corners can also provide safety depth.

I think we need to go to camp with a MINIMUM of 7 corners capable of making the team.
After the last 2 years, it wouldnt bother me at all if we kept 6 conrers on the 53.

So, Andy, let me get this straight. You expect Gay and chad Scott to be injured again just because they were injured last year? That doesn't sound like very good thinking. Its not like they have a history of always being injured ala Adrian Klemm or Guss Scott.

Do I think that the Pats will bring in 2-3 more DBs for TC? Yep. Do I think they might draft a corner? Yep. Is it an absolute? Nope. The reason I think they might draft a corner is because I am not sure they are sold on Asante as a starter. Personally, I would rather them switch Asante and Eugene. I think that Asante has shown skills that would make him a much better Safety than he is a corner. He'd be great against the slot receivers.

What AJ and Ochmed said. BB drafts 1 maybe 2, and brings in a UDFA.

No kidding. :agree:

I wouldn't mind a veteran FA instead of a UDFA if we can find one this year who does more than take up cap space. Seems BB was of the same mind with Townsend, just hasn't found one he likes yet that he can sign.

No RB? I'd be surprised.

I sort of forgot RB. I don't think we'll take one high, though --- recent Dillon developments sound like we're expecting a healthy year from him. But a Day Two RB sounds plausible to me.

I also like what Ochmed said about having a playmaker in the secondary. Rodney was that BIG TIME, and we saw last season what it can be like without one.

I think we need as many as we can put on the roster. Each year we think we have plenty and then i see Troy Brown back there and we are scrambling for DBs. I think we draft Sims from FSU or someone like him that can play LB/Safety. giving us versitility

we will draft a CB in the first 3 rds.
I find that about as likely as us drafting a QB in the first 3 rounds.

Depending on value and wehre the player is on the pats board will determine that. No matter what happens though, I will stick to my guns on that one. IMO we probably dont need anymore d-backs, maybe a late round safety, and that's about it. But, BB will draft a CB.
Because 5 decent safeties isn't enough? (Wilson, Harrison, Scott, Sanders, Hawkins)

I'd be disappointed if we draft any DB before round 4. The only way I can see it happening is if somebody BB really likes (i.e. Richard Marshall) falls well below where he's expected to go, and there's nobody he likes at a position of more need. If, say, Marshall is available at the 2nd round pick, and nobody else is there who would be a nice fit and a good value, I can see him taking him. But it's pretty unlikely.

They could use more talent. Expect 1 or 2 more DBs.

Pats defense had 10 interceptions. 31ST in passing yards allowed
per game. I would say that is an area that needs improvement.
Gee, the top 3 SS's on the team getting injured, and lacking the primary leaders (Harrison and Bruschi) on the defense for a large part of the year couldn't have had anything to do with that, eh? It's silly to think the team should place a higher priority on planning for THAT situation, where the top 3 people at one position get injured, than on having a full set of starters at other positions (LB and WR).

I agree lb and wr are huge holes. However, If we can get a stud
db. We have to take him.
WHy? It's more important to have lots of depth at DB than to have a good starting set of LBs?

The real value in rounds 1 and 2 in this draft is going to be at LB and RB. LB is our top need. RB isn't the TOP need for this year, but an RB of the future is a big need (and lest anyone forget, we had just as many problems at RB as we did at DB with injuries last year. At one point, the starting RB was someone who had been signed off the street a few days before the game (Evans)). Everything of course depends on how the picks fall, but at this point I think it will end up making the most sense to go LB and RB in rounds 1 and 2 (my choices being Carpenter and Addai, although I would be happy with Lawson too).

1 olb M.Lawson
2 cb R.Marshall (trade up a la E.Wilson)
3a wr Avant's 4.8 scares me. Hass or T.Watkins??
3b rb L.Washington FSU
I'd be happy with that overall, but I find it unlikely that Marshall will last much into round 2. And I don't really see BB liking Washington (too small). I'd be content with Avant in round 3 - he's more of a possession WR.

If we go with Carpenter instead of Lawson (who may well be gone by 21), we could trade down a bit, picking up another 3rd rounder perhaps. I'd like to see

1 trade down for Carpenter, picking up 3c
2 Joseph Addai (trading up with 4th rounder if necessary)
3a TE (Fasano, Klopfenstein, Byrd, or Scheffler)
3b WR (Avant or other)
3c DE/OLB tweener (Ryan LaCasse, 267 lbs, 4.47 40, or Stanley McClover)

On day 2, grab at least one OLman, and perhaps one of the day 2 QBs who could shift to WR (Robinson, etc.), and look for a bargain somewhere at DB.

That would make me very happy. I know many people like Lawson in round 1, but I think Carpenter is a better fit for the Pats. He could play either ILB or OLB in the 3-4, has a great relationship with Vrabel (something important to BB), and despite what a few people here claim, has great football instincts. There are some speedy DE/OLB tweeners that could be picked up in round 3 or 4 as developmental projects, or at least pass rushing specialists from OLB (LaCasse, etc.). Addai in round 2 would give us a nice RB of the future, and there's better value there than at DB at that point. There will be great value at TE in round 3.

Keep in mind that Romeo and Mangini will be robbing picks off the board that we used to be the only ones coveting!

I can't see too many picks, if any, being used on DBs this year. The Pats have spent the last three years stocking up on DBs, adding Wilson, Samuel, Hobbs, Scott and Sanders through the draft, as well as Gay and Hawkins through FA ( Was Gay undrafted?). There is a limit to which they can legislate for injuries. Last year was just freaky. Areas of long-term need, i.e. to replace ageing players, are surely LB and RB. I understand that they are areas of value in the draft. Receiver also seems to be an area in which they would look to improve before Training Camp.

Am I the first to predict this? We won't take a single DB on draft day, at least in the first 5 rounds.

Bumpity bump! I'm giving myself this prediction. :rocker: And if you consider Willie Andrews primarily a special teamer, we really didn't take one in all seven rounds.
