The Taboo Elephant in the Room [Mayo was a bad coach]

The season prior to his last year of his rookie contract, Dugger was fantastic, Pro Bowl worthy. It's not a stretch to see he was valued for $8 or $9m by another team
Actually, he and the entire secondary were awful in 2023. His stats for tackles increased because he now had about 98% of the snaps taking over for McCourty and Phillips didn't have anything left in the tank. But he was awful in coverage as shown again on the first play of the Saints game getting roasted by Olave. Not sure why that play was called exposing him like that.

What the Pats did was amateur hour. Any team could have signed him and the Pats would've received no compensation if the Pats didn't match. There was no interest in him, so the Pats signed him for more than his tag? I have no idea how Bobby approved this.

Not sure about that. It's quite unclear what he meant by "taboo" and "politically charged," waiting for him to offer an explanation.
Let me clear it up.

I meant, I heard a whole swath of folks on TV, podcasts, radio, even this board suggest that Mayo was jobbed because he wasn’t a white coach.

The insinuation was he didn’t get the same opportunity he would have had he been a white dude.

If anything, in retrospect, the literal opposite seems true: a white coach with identical experience, and connections would never have gotten that job. Jeff Saturday is the only close proximation I can think of and that was interim.

Mayo was fired because he was absolutely inept , did nothing but spew wish.com corporate platitudes and weasel out of any semblance of accountability…not because he was black.

But to this day some folks believe otherwise.

See?

Political.

Callahan didn’t get much longer…rightfully so.

My point was that if you take race out of it, he was ****ing terrible.

The #1 thing for me about Vrabel is who he brought with him in Cowden, Stretch, McDaniels, Marrone, etc. The brain trust that entered Gillette was huge and proceeded to kill the draft and free agency and get the players all pointed in the right direction.

Mayo had no brain trust and relied on Wolf which was a complete disaster.

I don't know why we need be squeamish about taking note of the obvious (though I have my suspicions): Mayo was an utter failure, a largely predictable one. His "hiring process," which seemed to be an array of empty gestures preparatory to hiring him because Robert had found him a charming travel companion, apparently, was a joke, an irresponsible joke. I think Jerrod got as far as you can on being a "nice guy" and frankly not much else. I suppose Robert should as he says feel guilty about "putting Jerrod in an untenable position," but he ought to feel at least as guilty over being so self-indulgently derelict in meeting his responsibilities as owner of the team.
