According to the NFL rules, it's supposedly to protect the equipment and cameraman.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I don't see where it says anything about protecting equipment or people. Please spell it out for me. The one thing I can infer from the rules excerpts in that thread is that perhaps it is motivated by preventing either team from gaining an advantage by being able to tape from a better or better equipped location than the other team? But that's just a guess.
