The Patriots Won, Yeah but.....
By: Steve Balestrieri

Amazing how everyone was ready to throw dirt on this Patriots team for the season but yet after a huge team victory on Sunday, all of the Boston media felt it necessary to caveat their stories or broadcasts with the ?Patriots win, yeah but?...

The NFL Network guys were joking about how, before Sunday they were talking about the demise of the Patriots — and now they're talking about them winning out. Funny what winning does.

The sports media overreacts to every win and to ever player acquisition, as well as to every loss, injury and free agent departure. Fans follow that lead, to an even greater degree. I think in the case of the Boston sports media & fans there may be a bit more of this due in part to the psyche of those that write about and follow the Red Sox (doomed to fail expectations), and also because the Boston media tends to scrutinize all of the pro sports teams to a greater degree than most other sports markets do.

I've written it before and I'll write it again: the majority of media members in this region really dislike (not mildly dislike) Bill Belichick, Bob Kraft and the team's fans. They feel Belichick, by withholding so much information, makes their jobs much more difficult than they should be. They're lazy. Dan Shaughnessy is a good example. In my opinion, he can really write well. But his columns (see this morning's as a prime example) are vivid examples of him constantly recycling old opinions and information: the Patriots stink, the Red Sox ownership group is meddlesome, our teams are "cursed" (the absolute largest load of BS) so I don't have to do any real analyses of why they sometimes lose, etc. He's the epitome of an entitled "hack", and he's not alone. Danny Boy and his pals really don't like it when our teams win, the Pats in particular.

At the risk of pissing off many who post here I agree with the author and would extend the negativity factor to a big chunk of Patriot fans and NE sports fans in general. I am always amazed at how spoiled NE sport fans are, how quickly they jump ship, and how negative we are overall. I am especially appalled at those who try to suggest that Belichik is failing the apatriots or that he is somehow doing a poor job running the team and should be replaced. While there can certainly be criticism leveled at him for personal decisions and the rare failings on the field the suggestion he isn't doing a great job overall is simply stupid and without merit. Watching the critics flail away recently has been really comical as the grasp for reasons to dump on Beilichik and ignOre the reality of just how good a job he is doing overall and how good this team is comparatively. The truth, at least from my perspective is that he is doing a remarkable job of rebuilding the team around Brady for the long term future and that their defensive failings are Botha part of that rebuilding job and exaggerated when Placed in the context of the leaguezas a whole because rule changes over the past decade have created a league where there is no such thing as good defensive teams and even the best teams in the league are plagued by defensive failings.

Unfortunately the perpetually miserable will never change and wil continue to whine piss and moan no matter how much success the Patriots have. I guess rooting for the best franchise in pro sports is just too difficult for those who are never happy and nothing willever change that.

You notice how quiet they get after a big win? If the Pats reel off 7 in a row you wont hear a peep out of them, not that Im complaining.

You figure wins against the stiffs of the league will somehow magically solve all the team's obvious problems?

I look at it as they have 7 games to build off of this latest win and improve, If they go 13-3 12-4 they get a bye and maybe host an AFC championship games, then who know what.
You see another AFC team that they have no chance against?

Totally agree....

The depth players get some experience, Ocho gets more comfortable with the offense and hopefully Spikes,McCourty, Chung get healthy down the stretch.....a bye and HFA can do wonders in the Playoffs....:rocker:

Not all of them go silent after a win, some of the endlessly miserable spout off no matter what they do.If they don't win it all they suck and Belichik sucks.

I like their chances. They have areas of concern but so does every team in the league. If they are healthy going into the playoffs they have s decent shot at pulling it off. Unfortunately they can play the best football in the league the next two months and the miserable will still dump all over them, and I won't be surprised to hear the screeching continue even if they win it all. Some people are just miserable, and nothing will ever change that.

I don't know about no chance, but a risk of beating us? Definitely.

Any hungry team that isn't sitting on a pedestal after an 8 game win streak, maybe one that everyone including the Pats consider a joke. Does that sound familiar? The Pats are not a perfect team for beating the Jets, nothing has changed except they now own first place really. People who get high on wins are just as bad as those who get low off losses.

Sometimes I just think people forget one of the primary tenets of the definition of "sport": Unknown outcome. The thing that makes competition so appealing is you don't know beforehand who's going to win, even if you think you have a pretty good idea.

Just remember, every time we win, it's not because we did everything right and there's no way we could have lost. And every time we lose, it's not because we messed up somewhere and there's no way we could have won.

But people like to have something or someone to blame. It helps them make sense of their disappointment.

Yes, there are many who criticize when we lose and disappear when we win.

The folks that bother me more are the true bandwagoners. They are great critics when we lose. When we win once, we switch to the best team in the AFC.

You play the schedule that you are given. Every team has some problem areas. Improving on them, over time, is what teams strive for, not magic.

Certainly losing agianst "the stiffs of the league" won't solve any problems either. So I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

I'm pretty sure his point is that it really doesn't matter what they do or how much they win, the cynics can criticize all they want because there is always something to b.tch about.
