The Patriots desperately need to trade a CB

Many pats fans could see how Butler's game improved over the course of last year, but most of us were worried that he just wasn't a number 1 corner entering this season.

With Logan Ryan, I think many fans questioned whether he even deserved a roster spot.

Both of these players have proven a lot of the critics wrong and they both had superb games today. Of the two, the more impressive has to be Ryan since his game has skyrocketed out of nowhere.

The point of lamentation is imagine this unit with Tarrell Brown and what Darryl Roberts flashed in camp! Butler and Ryan have blown my mind. I'll admit, I had no idea what to expect but they're putting themselves in the conversation as an elite 1-2 tandem and I do not like to make a claim like that lightly.

Not anyone attending camp this summer. In fact, as the weeks wore on it was very clear he was the choice opposite Malcolm Butler. From what I remember , the controversy centered around the slot corner plus whether Darryl Roberts or Jordan Richards would make the roster. The knee jerk Revis Jilted Lover Association doesn't really apply in any real sense to what goes on in Foxboro.

There was debate about whether or not Jordan Richards would make the roster? He was a 2nd round pick.

He was injured to start camp. I remember speculation he might be IR'ed. The fact remains that Butler and Ryan were clearly the starting corners. The first weeks of camp made this quite clear.

I was thinking on creating a thread, but this one will do nicely, I would like to hear everyone's opinion on one thing (About Butler).

I was not as enthusiastic as some here when it became clear that he would be our number one CB. After some growing pain, fortunately, I admit that he is, in fact, awesome. However, i have one problem with his play: He takes the ball out of the receivers hands instead of breaking the pass straight up.

Now, of course, it produces the same thing, an incomplete pass, but do you guys think this is something to be concerned about? If he goes up against some sure handed guys, like Fitzgerald, AJ and such, can he still be as good as he has been this whole year (Which is VERY good)?

I was wondering about this for some time, but he keeps knocking the ball out, so I never really opened up the discussion. But I would like to know what everyone thinks of that.

He's made a lot of plays on balls in the air as well. I think he just stays composed and realizes if he can't make a play on the ball, he needs to get into their hands instead of desperately lunging on a play they have no chance against. And against some big WRs, that might be the only play possible.

And on a sidenote, how about that Cordarrelle Patterson trade now? Jamie Collins, Logan Ryans, Josh Boyce (nobody's perfect), and the 4th that we ended up trading as part of the Blount deal...yowza.

I miss those days when we used to have the very periodic thread about how BB does not know how to draft/acquire DB's and someone else should be running the show, or the game has passed him by, __________ insert other thought..

D back swagger is the best swagger on the field.. even with McCourty out last night these guys did not seem to miss a beat.. do your job!!!

Butler was able to put his hands between the defenders at the time the ball arrived a few times and rip the arms apart to stop the catch. The timing and technique to do that on the run is difficult. CBs really playing well.

Many people on this board called for Ryan to be one of the final Training Camp cuts, not too long ago.....

Let that sink in for a minute.
Yep. I figured him to be the 4/5th DB.

Glad I was wrong!

Remarkable that by sticking with the guys they had, plus picking through the draft and League leftovers, the Pats will take the CB position from a 2015 preseason "declared disaster" to a strength going into camp in 2016.

Butler and Ryan are playing lights out. NOBODY...would have ever imagined this. Johnson made a few nice plays tonight....and that swagger...LOVE IT!
I was sanquine as the season started. He freely cut average veterans. I knew that BB was comfortable, so that meant a Rabbit was about to be pulled from the hat of he and Earnie.

But the self impressed Draftniks, would be draft gurus, like Major Rockhead, thought he did not merit even, to be drafted. Like Tavon Wilson they were after BB's GM scalp; and the player in question did nothing to incur their wrath, except to be drafted by BB.

Butler and Ryan are a great starting pair who'd have thought. I was saying before the season this secondary could compare to 2004 based on how you butler looked and the promise of some of the pickups/ developing players, but I obviously never imagined it being Thu good. Def a better unit than the 04 one. Getting Robert back will be huge as would if Johnson continues to impress.

I'd still think of drafting a corner as aren't both butler/ryan in the final year of their contracts next season??

Ryan is playing fantastic and the reason he's playing fantastic is he's playing aggressive. And the reason Ryan is playing aggressive? Because McCourty is watching out for him over the top. Regardless though, Ryan's technique this year has been incredible.

The other unsung heroes of why our Secondary is so good are Jabaal Sheard and Alan Branch 2.0.

Ryan is now playing the way we/I expected him to after his rookie year. It is just so nice to see a very good defense on the field.

In years past, BB has not had a lot of success in bringing DBs in during the season from the scrap heap, this year with Coleman and Johnson, it seems like his luck has turned around for the better.

Logan Ryan has made a huge leap this season. Admittedly I, like many others, have been critical of Logan Ryan through 2014 til the early part of this season. Very very pleasantly surprised by him. He's been playing every bit as good as Butler in recent weeks, maybe even a little better. That tandem has been very refreshing. It's super refreshing to see an (almost) entirely homegrown Pats secondary playing at such a high level.

I wonder how much of a priority the secondary will be in the off-season, they aren't losing any contributors and Ryan and butler become extension candidtes. Do the pats trust these guys to keep it up into next season or will they be thinking they still need to add a decent piece at corner? Right now if they added a corner they would be 4th or 5th on the depth chart
