The Patriots Defense Is Built to Stop the Falcons Offense

The Falcons offense can do lots of different things with their personnel, but so can our D.

I don't expect to shut them out. Even the great Broncos D gave up 20+. But we may be able to limit them a bit in ways that other defenses haven't because of our flexibility.

I would argue that our defense paired with our offense would be more likely than not to allow fewer points to this team than Denver would.

That's fair, and I think we have other advantages too like our run D compared to Denver. But it will really depend on who executes on Sunday.

I think our offense vs their defense is a huge mismatch. I expect our defense to fight to a draw with their offense and we win comfortably.

The Broncos D couldn't stop running backs this year whether that be running or catching the ball out of the backfield. That right there is a major difference.

That said, the Broncos D had the best pass D. If the our front 3/4 can contain the run game, we win this going away.

BB's defense...

...more than meets the eye.

Thats the beauty of this team imo its hard to find a team we DONT match up well against at least on d. When you have a stout run d where you dont need to flood the box to stop the opposing rb and a secondary as good as ours it gives bb the flexibility to take away the #1 guy, who i think will be julio. I domt think freemAn will kill us and even if he does dunno if theyll have the patience to stick with the ground game and take the ball outta matty ice's hands. The only issue i potentially see is defending whatever rb in the passing game but i believe we'll figure something out.

I really am beginning to think we can control their offense. Nothing is more frustrating to a high powered offense than not being able to operate like usual. It happened to the Bills in 1991, the Rams in 2002 and us in 2008. Pressing and a sense of panic can creep in - especially if our offense is performing. Sure they have a lot of weapons, but on any given play they only have 5 possible playmakers. And if we can get in Ryan's grill, their receivers are all less of a threat. Good tackling is also key - can turn successful 3rd down plays into punts.

I've been arguing this point to friends and family members the last week or so. Honestly, this offense reminds me of the offense we just played and destroyed. They have one of the best receivers in the NFL, great RBs and a lot of other role players who can dig in when the number ones are shut out by scheme. Obviously, the Falcons are better on offense than the Steelers but not by a ton to me.

We have the players and the scheme to slow down this offense, just as we did the Steelers "high-powered" offense.

I think the HUGE aspect of our D the last 3 years that has been totally over looked is how incredibly good it has been defending the run from nickel.

Nickel is our base and we have been one of the best run Ds in the NFL.
IIRC in the last 12 games of 14 we were #2 in yards ypc and #1 in rushing tds allowed.
This year we are near the top in all and I think #3 since the first few weeks. (And definitely post JC91)
Doing that from a nickel base is unbelievable.

If you look at Falcon's losses, they could not run the ball. 52 yards against TB, 52 against Seattle, 48 against Philly. They rushed for more against the Chargers and Chiefs but they should have actually won those games.

I think the Pats first need to stop the run and don't bite on the play action.
