We're the Guards

When I read this, it made me think of this.

On the bright side, to make that many mistakes on the road against a very good team and still have a great chance to win it at the end says you have a great team. Once again the offense that gives us a solid shot at 12-4+ year in year out is back, unfortunately so is that defense that cannot be counted on when it matters. Right now we're far too depleted on defense. No pass rush and cannot get off the field on 3rd downs - looks all too familiar. Yeah a healthy Talib likely changes that but it's time to face it, we have no idea if he'll be healthy week to week.

While our overall approach was great offensively, JMD really ****ed up on that 3rd and 1. We needed a TD there, I was even thinking it should have been 4 down territory. How many people thought our defense could protect a 3 point lead there? Also a very bad decision by BB at the end of the 1st half to not use our TO when Newton was sacked at :40 left. Sure, it still would've been tough to get points there but why the heck not. Very disappointed at our coaching in key situations.

ST was great yesterday, they started several drives inside their 20 and we started one on their 40. Ghost again deserves props for 2 tough FG's (thanks to Allen). Unfortunately, the defense blew it and we left too many points on the board. Forget the refs, the real issue to take away from last night is our depleted defense. Hopefully Gregory and Dennard make the difference later on but it's not as much a given as the offense turnaround with Gronk.

I'm still too irate to offer up any thoughts, but can someone explain to me how if that is not DPI (which it was) that it is not the very definition of defensive holding?

The D is starting to look like the 2011-12 D.

I was watching the fantasy show on NFLN after the game. Couldn't sleep.

OK, I only watched for a few minutes.

I realize Brady did not have a good game fantasy wise, but these chumps on that show actually said Brady played very very poorly.

What?

This kind of commentary is insane. Are people really so lost in fantasy stats that moving your team up and down the field is an example of poor play? Or having your RB score a TD is poor play? Wow.

Looking back, the non-call in the end was bogus, but the Panthers made bigger plays when it counted.

- Panthers dialed up that fake blitz to confuse Solder. That was a great call and was probably something they saw on film

- Panthers D knowing full well that Ridley is prone to fumbling was constantly going after the ball when he ran and it paid off

- Cam made spectacular plays on 3rd downs to keep drives going

- Their defense made a stand and held the Pats to 3 points while our defense gave up a touchdown

The only real bonehead play from our guys was Mankins unsportsmanlike penalty.

Also we need more creative ways to neutralize the pass rush in obvious passing downs i.e. 2 minute drills. Brady didn't have nearly enough time especially the last play. I remember we used to roll Brady out which let him dance around the pocket a bit more as opposed to just letting the DL pounce on him. Good chance someone gets at least some room on that last play and Brady has a reasonable chance to try and thread one in IF he had the time. Yeah it should've been PI as the defender made a poor play once the ball was in the air but everything was covered when Brady had to throw. Weis did this a couple times in SB38 when Brady was virtually untouched against a great front and an OL that wasn't a whole lot on paper.

Does anyone think the NFL is punishing the Patriots for the Hernandez situation? Goodell admitted to the media he felt deceived by Belichick after Spygate in articles as recently as 2011. The Hernandez situation was also considered a black mark on the NFL. We’ve lost 2 games this season in large part because of the decisions made by officials, I am not suggesting there is a conspiracy against the Patriots but I am curious if 31 other teams are more likely to get the benefit of a call than the New England Patriots.

Nah, I think last night the refs just didn't have the balls to follow through with that call in that situation against the home team. If Goodell had anything to do with it, the flag wouldn't have been thrown altogether which totally draws attention to it. The call against the Jets was admittedly just a great move by Rex or whoever tipped the ref off to look for the infraction.

Ok makes sense, I just had it run through my mind so I figured I would grab some others perspective.

Just like the Jets game in that they made enough stupid plays to allow the game to be decided on a refs call. The dumb decisions in the first half to draw 15 yard penalties and Ridleys fumble ultimately cost them the game.

Credit to Cam Newton, he made some great plays with his feet last night and took advantage of the situation to get his team the win.

I would like to see Amendola on the field more than 68% of the time. Has anyone else noticed that the more snaps Develin receives the less points we score as an offense?

QB Tom Brady -- 72-of-72
TE Rob Gronkowski -- 63-of-72
WR Julian Edelman -- 59-of-72
WR Aaron Dobson -- 53-of-72
WR Danny Amendola -- 49-of-72
RB Shane Vereen -- 34-of-72
RB LeGarrette Blount -- 19-of-72
FB James Develin -- 19-of-72
RB Stevan Ridley -- 19-of-72
TE Michael Hoomanawanui -- 15-of-72
TE Matthew Mulligan -- 14-of-72
WR Kenbrell Thompkins -- 14-of-72
WR Josh Boyce -- 2-of-72

You aren't Belichick and pretending you have even a modicum of his knowledge is a joke.

Where did I make this claim again?

Second, there is only so many injuries that can be covered before you see a downgrade. We clearly hit that with the loss of Gregory, Talib and Dennard. This was the 1st game that ALL THREE were out. So, it's an entirely DIFFERENT situation. I would think that you'd understand that. Clearly I was giving you too much gredit.

Talib was in for most of the game along with a three year starter in Arrington and one of the better safeties in the AFC in McCourty. They were still horrible on third down, especially in the money quarter. It wasn't all on the secondary, though. The DL was consistently pushing too far upfield and guys were blowing their assignments which allowed Newton to escape from the pocket for a couple of big third down runs. A good example of this is when Hightower just simply ran into the back of the DL as Carter pushed upfield to try to generate a pass rush (which was also pathetic for most of the night).

The defense didn't suck tonight.

Sure it did.

Clearly you don't know what it means to have a defense that sucks. You've clearly forgotten 2002, 2000, and 1991, just to name a few.

I remember all of those defenses save '91, given my age at that time. I also remember the way the defense played at the beginning of this season, which was night and day from last night. Want to know what they all have in common besides being bad? They're all irrelevant to the topic of last night's defense being awful.

The defense actually played pretty well, especially when you consider that C. Jones, Ninkovich, Chandler Jones, and Vellano were all TACKLED at one point or another tonight. And that doesn't include Ninkovich being held on the Newton scramble late in the game.

Can you point to a picture, GIF, or video where those guys are all being tackled? Because I didn't see that. If it happened all game, it shouldn't be that hard to find. Instead, what I remember is routine holding which, unless it's egregious, goes uncalled a lot of the time. The Pats did it a good amount too. What I saw was Gross thoroughly controlling Chandler Jones at the point of attack and the rest of the DL unable to generate anywhere near a consistent pass rush. When they got into the backfield, Newton usually broke away and ran because someone behind them would usually blow their assignment and failed to contain.

Something tells me that Belichick always tempers his criticism based on the player he's dealing with. That includes rookies..

Given everything we've heard about his film breakdowns, it would appear that you're, wait a minute... let me just quote you because you said it better than I can...

talking out your rear end.

But hey, I'm glad you're happy with that defensive performance. Apparently it doesn't take much to impress you. :rocker::rocker::rocker:

They always call that, always. Over or under throw, out of bounds whatever. The guy was holding and they always call it. I think we had two INTs taken away on bad throws because of it this year, wtf?

How did the refree deem this uncatchable?

"the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred.”

Except it wasn't.

By "about" they mean 4 seconds apart.

The reason the ball was intercepted and Gronk couldn't make a play is because Keuchly was driving him into the back of the end zone. Gronk couldn't make any forward progress back toward the ball. What a sham of a non-call.
