The Jamie Collins Trade Was Shocking, but Let's Make the Case for It

Lee Schechter

Shock. Disgust. Speechlessness. Anger. Those are the first feelings that ran through New England Patriots fans and media when the blockbuster bombshell news of All-Pro linebacker Jamie Collins being traded to the lowly Cleveland Browns dropped on Monday

One thing is for sure to me. There is now no excuse to not sign all of Butler, Hightower, Bennett & Sheard.

Also I expect some good FA acquisitions on top of it.

The Pats now have to win the superbowl or this will be forever questioned just like last year and not putting more effort into locking up HFA.

I agree. I thought that the Pats traded C Jones so that they would be able to sign Hightower, Collins and Butler.

Now that Collons is gone, I assume that they'll be able to sign Hightower, Butler and Bennett

Collins joins a long list of notable players Bill has traded away or cut unexpectedly (not injury related).

Lawyer Milloy
Randy Moss
Mike Vrabel
Richard Seymour
Brandon Meriweather
Logan Mankins
Chandler Jones
Jamie Collins

That doesn't even begin to tell the story about free agents he has let walk away.... the list is too numerous to even comprehend.

The formula seems to be working out just fine.

I think to explain it in the most simple terms, BB and MP did not like what they were seeing from Collins on the field and did not expect it to improve this year, so they de facto cut him. I think attitude issues, injury issues, having adequate replacements for JC, and controlling where he went could have played into it too, but nearly as much as on the field issues.

IMFO.

message here is, don't get into a heated argument with one of your top coaches when you're not playing well.

That is the kind of dumb move that gets you dealt from the top Super Bowl contender to a winless doormat. Enjoy!
