Everybody has a sinister perspective on this. I've always believed that Bill was going to be true and trade the player before he bottomed out. TB was in his late 30's, BB thought he could win with Jimmy and was going to trade TB for a boatload of picks. It wasn't vindictiveness, just following his philosophy of trading a player a year early. Bob Kraft let personal feelings get in the way and backed TB. The beginning of the end. Who knows what would have happened. We all got some more great football and some of the greatest games. I will always be a BB/TB guy.

My mistake. That must have been when he went and won his 7th Super Bowl with a different team. Good thing Belichick got rid of him before that disaster.

He's saying that Bill's philosophy was to trade him before he bottomed out. Aka the whole "move on a year early rather than a year late". At 40 (Brady's age in the 2017 season), was a very natural time for Belichick to view Brady as on borrowed time and making the move to get some value out of him before he declined, assuming he believed he could compete with Jimmy G. If you think Jimmy G is a QB who can win Super Bowls, then the prudent move would have been to trade Brady while he only had a few years left and stack picks to load up around Jimmy who would be your QB for 10 years in the future

So there was a reason to believe Bill's philosophy would lead him to wanting to move on around the time all the smoke was around.

Ultimately Brady forced the issue because he was playing so good he won the MVP that year and Kraft intervened (if you believe the rumor).

I know what he's saying, but apparently Belichick was such a bad judge of QB playing ability he decided to move on from Brady, who was clearly still one of the best quarterbacks in football, and replace him with Cam Newton, who was one of the worst quarterbacks in football. Then Brady went and won another Super Bowl, while the Patriots swirled down the toilet. And while the Jimmy Johnson philosophy was to get rid of a player a year early instead of a year late, that didn't mean you get rid of them while they were still great, which Brady was, and Belichick should have known better than anyone .

This was similar to Joe Montana/Steve Young, Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love/Aaron Rodgers. Even though Tom is the GOAT, so is father time. However, Bill was seriously off his rocker after the 2013 season thinking Tom was "falling off the cliff" and needed to be convinced then not to trade him. Tom had two rookies starting on the outside (who flamed out of the league), Edelman and Amendola taking over for Welker and only Gronk because Hernandez got arrested. Pats had Emmanuel Sanders signed to an offer sheet, but the Steelers being the assholes they are, only matched it at the 11th hour to mess with the Pats.

Drafting Jimmy G in 2014 was an idiotic use of draft capital, much like it was in 2008 when Bill used a 3rd rounder on Kevin O'Connell when your QB just put up historic numbers.

With that said, the Pats wouldn't have done much with Tom between 2020-2022. Probably 9-10 win seasons, but a quick playoff exit.
