Patriots Tailgate

Ted Mahoney · tS29puo1n7g9a3h377c6e06 ·

Something to keep an eye on! Punter Jake Bailey Could Be Released if not extended to spread out this cap hit.
“Because Bailey’s performance dipped a bit in 2021, and thanks to a proven performance escalator he triggered by making the Pro Bowl in 2020, he’s set to earn a salary of nearly $4 million this season — the highest of any NFL punter per ESPN's Mike Reiss and Miguel of Pats Cap “The Patriots can wipe that entire salary off their books by cutting Bailey, leaving behind just $72,245 in dead money from his rookie signing bonus.” The top pick in the fifth round gets a $698,619 salary and a four-year, $3.64 million contract. The Patriots could theoretically draft a punter for four years that would cost less than one year of Jake Bailey--!! Remember Baily replaced Zoltan Mesko for the same reason.
Because the Patriots have multiple holes to fill on their roster, there is a chance they may sacrifice a high-priced punter for a position of greater importance.
“Bailey still is a very good punter, but that’s a lot of money to devote to that position, even for a special teams aficionado like Bill Belichick. If Belichick believes he can get comparable production from a much cheaper rookie — “Punt God” Matt Araiza from San Diego State is this year’s top prospect — that’s something he’d have to consider.

Bailey was poor last year.

How much of that was down to him personally, as opposed to pretty much everyone on special teams playing like assholes, I'm not sure.

I'd be amazed if BB isn't licking his chops at the prospect of Matt Araiza though, and saving a few dollars

Bailey was injured and the protection was the worst I have ever seen.

Do you have Tourettes?

It wouldn't be the first time BB has replaced a punter that seemed to be fine. Bailey took over for Mesko, and while I think Bailey is definitely better, at the time it was still a mild surprise. With two 5ths this year (and possibly more if they trade down in round 1 or 2), if Araiza is there it would not shock me if BB grabbed him.

EDIT: Wires crossed, Allen replaced replaced Mesko, and Bailey replaced Ryan Allen.

Even with the dip, I’m not worried about Bailey athletically. Financially though ? Makes sense to move on.

To this point, from what I can tell, Ryan Allen is the only punter that Bill has signed to a second contract since taking over the Pats. It seems to be a position he's comfortable moving on from if a young player is available.

I would think he’ll either be extended or we will draft some competition there. Bailey deserves another look but that # is very high and ill be suprised if he plays this year out at that #. If bb likes him enough hes going to extend him to lower that #.

I just remember too Zoltan and Ryan Allen both were solid and suddenly we move on when there was an opportunity to save.

In 2021, the Pats were tied with Carolina for most blocked punts.

Punters have nothing to do with punts being blocked, IMO. That is a protection issue, IMO.

Who will handle kick offs then? Folk is reliable but does not have a strong leg.

I say extend Bailey if he is amendable to a reasonable cap number.....

I was replying to special teams performing poor overall.

BB touched on consolidating specialist players ie the long snapper etc in that epic special teams answer in a presser last season...

Do they have to cut him, or redo his deal, by a certain date? I'm missing something here as to why is there a "Jake Bailey Watch" thread.

Once the season begins they have to start paying that salary, making it harder to adjust. But until then, they could do a new deal at any time.

Never become to fond of any punter for the Patriots. That is one lesson I have learned over the last decade. Belichick keeps his kickers forever but switches punters frequently.

Yet Another lesson why precious draft capital should never Ever EVAH be spent on Special Teamers, including Gunners-Only.

Ya gonna have to let him go.

A punter is just a punter..... unless he's Tom Tupa.
