Ted Larsen, rookie starter for Bucs

Our 6th round pick, Ted Larsen, has started the past 10 games at left guard for Tampa Bay. I believe he was considered a high upside project on draft day, having little experience on the OL.

I guess we kept Ohrenberger instead at final cuts.

Just one more example of the great draft BB had. Starters squirting through his fingers.

Yeah, I was reading an All-Rookie opinion piece recently and Larson was listed as the top rookie guard. I was trying to remember where I knew that name from when it dawned on me that he was drafted by the Pats.

It's hard to know whether he was misevaluated, wasn't a fit for the system, or was simply a victim of the numbers game, but Guard is shaping up to be a bit of a position of need for next year. I could see a high draft pick being used on a Guard (Pats 1st or Carolina's 2nd). Would be nice to still have Larson.

Seriously. BB waived Larsen and he's playing well for Tampa, who picked him up. Not complicated.

Pretty simple. Had Neal, Connolly, Ohrn, and Oki ahead of him. Wendell had been in the system for 2 years so he was ahead of him too. I did read that the Pats wanted to sign him to the PQ but it didn't happen.

Seems like there were some players w/ more experience ahead of him.

BB and Scar don't make too many mistakes when evaluating the potential of OLs. Maybe they did here but who knows.

As to Larsen, he was not good enough to stick with us. Its really pretty simple and it shows the depth and strength of our OLine, even with Mankins holding out.

A starting guard on any NFL team, no matter how crappy but especially one that is in the playoff hunt, is good enough depth for us. The problem is the FO made a mistake in cutting him instead of Ohrn. Not that I am blaming them or anything as stuff like that happens, but he's definately better than Ohrn at this point.

FYI Ohrnberger did NOT beat out Larsen, they were cut the same day. (Ohrn was later re-signed off the PS.) In fact, the day-1 roster was very thin on interior OL: Ojinnaka didn't count toward the 53, Mankins didn't report, and Kaczur was injured. That left only 4 guys for 3 starting jobs: Connolly, Koppen, Neal and Wendell.

So to look for who "beat out" Larsen, you have to look to other positions. Presumably nobody wishes the Pats had cut Deaderick, or Fletcher, or even Kyle Love? Wheatley made sense to keep given that Bodden had just gone down. Pretty much the ONLY expendable-looking guy on that roster was Marques Murrell. Even with Murrell, though, remember that they traded for Tracy White right on cut day, and couldn't know yet whether he'd work out.

The Pats might have hoped to keep Larsen on the PS they way they kept Ohrnberger, and gambled that a 6th-round interior lineman would clear waivers. That's a gamble you usually win, but not this time. So it goes. Given the quality of OL play the Pats have showed this year, it's hard to complain.

I watched Tampa V St Louis earlier in the year, and Larsen was garbage, I think I recall at least 2 false starts and 2 holding penalties called on him. Not saying he wont be good down the line, but I could see why he was let go

Nice explanation Patchick, people need to consider the entire circumstances and not just a snapshot of the situation. Larsen had a lot of promise and I'm sure the Pats would have loved to have kept him on the PS. He did NOT earn a roster spot with his play in TC however. Also people need to consider that Larsen was beaten out by Steve Manieri too, who the Pats claimed on waivers from Houston, and who they apparently feel had a future with them to stash him on the active roster for a few weeks.

Are you sure that was meant as arrogance/sarcasm? It's perfectly reasonable taken at face value as a compliment: BB had such a great draft that even guys he had to cut are starting elsewhere.

In fact, given that everybody in the world agrees at this point that it WAS a great draft, the quote wouldn't make much sense as a dig.

It's a confusing thread. I thought Barwin was geniune and had no sense that he was complaining about the one that got away - just drawing attention to something that others may not be aware of. I thank him for that.

I haven't been around the Draft Forum since last may and wonder if the Box-Barwin tension has not carried over from that arena.
