Stidham looked promising against 3rd stringers, running a vertical slice of our offense into the usual preseason defenses.

There is also no need to use hyperboles as so far performed above expectations but was neither terrific in the game nor consistently through the preseason or camp. If he were you'd not be able to escape the media hype but instead its mostly crickets.

Point is making him the backup is playing russian roulette with your season over the 53rd roster spot.

Also for every anectode you post about successful QBs there are at least 5 more that present the opposite.

Hoyer is gone after this season anyway as he will get too expensive now that SF is not picking up the tab anymore.

For this season he is the ideal backup as he knows the entire offense and has necessary experience. Hopefully with a full season to learn and all the reps Stidham will be where he needs to be to do this next year.

I dont get why people are willing to risk an entire season over min-maxing one roster spot. We don't need that additional roster spot. It is a nice to have.

With Hoyer you would get the full McDaniels offense. Nothing more defensive or less complete.

Obviously he would not run it as efficiently as Brady but thats why one is the GOAT and the other a backup.

With Hoyer the gameplan would still be dictated by the opponent whereas with Stidham it would be by what he can do at that point.

Stidham has been my binkie from this time last year. One of those very rare times that BB actually drafted someone that I wanted him to, so I am prejudiced to say the least.

Trading Hoyer saves us 3 mill in cap room, if we can get the fifth back from Philly (bennett) and let them keep the 7th, I will be thrilled! Let Stidham play this week against the titans and make the decision. Then I would move on

Similar situation to what we had when Jimmy G came up for renewal. You just can't pay two starting QBs in the salary cap era. It takes up too much room on your cap.

I think everyone on the board would be interested in getting a decent pick and recoup cap space by trading Hoyer. The risk is leaving the backup QB spot to an untested, unproven rookie.

I really liked what I saw out of Stidman but elevating him to QB2 his rookie year might be asking too much of him.

With that said, BB did it in 2014 with 37 year old TB12 and rookie Jimmy G

SF cut Hoyer and we signed him to a fresh three year deal, so I'm not sure what you mean.

Like I stated, we don't know BB's assessment. Maybe BB will feel there is not a difference in risk, if he feels Stidham is picking up the offense and has starter NFL talent, something that Hoyer is not.

Plus there's the three million in cap savings, along with the pick and roster spot.

I'm not saying this is a definite move either way, but to eliminate the possibility just because Stidham is a rookie doesn't make sense to me. Will they win a Super Bowl long term with either? Can both hold the team together for four games?

I think the season is at risk without Tom Brady anyway. By the end of presseason he might feel there is at least as good a chance with Stidham as Hoyer.

Hoyer had guaranteed money with offset language from the 49ers, meaning we could just pay him the minimum for 2017 and 2018 and let the 49ers pay the rest. However, this doesn't apply for 2019, so his roughly $3 million salary should roughly represent market value.

Oh I completely agree and was being sarcastic. I got tired of reading the quotes of many of the posters here, who complained about the trade, especially after Jimmy did well in his first few games, before he got hurt again. People treated Hoyer's inclusion as trash, which I found rather foolish.

Hoyer's biggest value to NE is as a scout team QB. He is a vet who has played in a lot of systems and can emulate the opposition very well.

Brady wanted Hoyer here do we really piss Tom off by making Stidham number 2 I dunno.
Also Hoyer was the architect of our defensive masterpiece in the superbowl and got Flores a head coaching job.
Now he more than likely would of earned one without it but that cemented it.

    Trade Hoyer
    Keep Stud-arm

Which will further ignite Brady’s competitive fire; which in turn will enable Brady to play at an elite level for 5 more seasons.

    Trade Stud-arm for a 1st/2nd
NE wins about 2-3 more SBs; possibly all 5
    Problem solved ;)

Oh, the articles after the super bowl about Hoyer recognizing something with the Rams and telling the pats. I guess I kind of thought of those as a feel good story and didn't really give him credit for developing the entire defense. I have also always really questioned the supposed dislike between Brady and Jimmy G, as a media thing to generate clicks.
