Taking another look at the cap situation for next season.

Now, Brady is locked up through the '17 season, IIRC, but after that?

He's actually under contract through 2019 or 2020. Used to be through 2017 but NE extended him last year (or the year before -- can't remember which). (Which also why so many of us figure that one way or the other Garapollo is gone before the start of the 2018 season.)

Brady is due $31 million in cash the next 3 seasons. How much do you expect to pay his backup for those years? More or less?

Less this year and next but I honestly don't think Brady cares what others make, although that could be incredibly naive. Can Belichick decide to save the money out of this years free agency to roll over for 2018 free agency and use it for a franchise tag on Garrapolo?

You heard it here first - Pats extend Jimmy G this offseason - part of the reason they've accumulated that excess cap space. He's going nowhere, he's the QB of the future in NE. They hand JG some decent money up front -say $10M- but put off the bulk of big guaranteed bonuses for 2 years (meaning they start to come after next season). Brady has this year and next, that's it. And don't be shocked if he gets Tony Romoed next fall.

First of all it makes no sense for Garrapolo to sign an extension unless he loves holding a clipboard. Second, Brady is the best player in football right now, not three years ago, and he shows absolutely no sign of age or deterioration and getting rid of him while he is at the top of his game makes absolutely no sense at all, and six quarters of Garrapolo is far from enough for any long term evaluation of him. RGIII was offensive rookie of the year and he flat out sucks.

This year, March. They love Brissett. IMO Garopollo is gone.

I remember thinking that Wilson & RGIII were the next great things. I was half right.

Kaepernick played really well until coordinators had enough film to figure out the best ways to stop him. Much as I like Garrapolo claiming. He's a franchise QB is foolish.
