Sundry Thoughts before the 2026 Draft

Great discussion. Similar points to what Mayo made.

Touched on positional value and first round rookie contracts. Running backs drafted high make similar money to top tier veterans, so might seem like an overpay but it might unlock value potential to the offense as a whole at other positions.

This is cool. Some guys at Pride of Detroit created a "Grit Index" trying to account for various intangibles that match well with values the FO prioritizes. Here's how some 2026 prospects score:

Jacob Rodriguez, Blake Miller, Keylan Rutledge, Treydan Stukes. Hmmm.

A bunch of draft pundits sharing their favourite draft prospects. I'm only 3 in and Todd McShay has already nominated Gabe Jacas. Nice. He's not quite my favourite but he's up there. I think you all know who I'd choose if asked.

We all know you're man-love for Avrell Reese..

Akheem Mesidor

With the 2026 draft just over a week out, here are some miscellaneous thoughts, FWIW.

1. You can't do it all.

This is a very deep draft and the Pats have 11 picks, but we will not get everyone and meet every need. Trying to do it all can be the wrong approach. "The enemy of good is better." It's better to focus on key players and values who fit what you want.

2. Building an Identity

2025 was about building a competitive roster. We want to continue to build out the roster but we are already competitive. First and foremost, however, this draft should be about building an identity. Vrabel has miraculously raised the Pats from bottom-dwellers to SB contenders in a single season. Now, this is Vrabel's golden opportunity to build the team in the image he wants. More than anything - more than just adding talent or plugging holes - this should be the goal.

We pretty much know what that image/identity looks like for Vrabel. Talent and speed are a given. Good players, solid people. Sound fundamentals and work ethic. Team players. But above all, versatile, "effort and finish" and "violence".

The Pats outbullied the Chargers, Texans, and Broncos, then got bullied by the Seahawks. I bet that hurt. A lot. We want to be the bully kicking sand in other people's faces, not on the receiving end.

3. Building Around the Lines

To that end, I see this as a build around the lines Draft, which means passing on "shiny" (to use @DaBruinz term) offensive weapons, and even back end pieces. Shiny doesn't win championships. Bully does. Eliot Wolf talked a little about the lines being a strength of this draft.

4. Overloading is good.

Make what is good better, make what is better best. Championships are won with dominant units, not with average across the board. Rob Staton talks about this re the Seahawks:

I agree with most of these thoughts. I believe the Patriots want to strengthen on the lines, in particular OL and Edge.

Here's what I would do in terms of tactics.

Day 1 - Unless I have a guy ranked as a bona fide top 20 talent 1st rounder fall to us at 31, I would actively discuss moving down into the early 2nd. The talent late 1st is very similar to early 2nd. Maybe some team will fall in love with a QB and try to trade up to get him and give us an extra 3rd or a 4th this year and a 4th next year.

Top pick - Best Tackle available or best EDGE available. I don't think we go WR early because we have AJ Brown trade lined up for probably our future 2027 2nd round pick. Iheanachor or Blake Miller would be ideal for this pick. If not best EDGE available.

Round 2 #63 - I believe we need to actively move up. From numerous mocks, it looks like there will be a run on EDGE in the 50's. We need to get ahead of that run and get the best player we can. We can use ammunition we got from moving down in the 1st to move ahead in the 2nd and get a potential rotation piece who could eventually become a starter.

Round 3 - This is BPA. We will probably look at LB, TE, or WR here.

Round 4 - Depending who we took in round 3 we can still look at LB/TE/WR. If we picked up an extra 4th from trading down we have a lot of choices. With the last 4th rounder we might look at a run-stuffing DL just to give us more depth on the lines.

I expect us to double dip at OL and EDGE for sure.

I think we draft a WR to line up as Boutte's replacement. We'll either target a route runner technician like a Bernard to get open early or a deep threat like a Stribling or Caldwell to give Maye a downfield target.

This is a good draft to ship picks into the future if we don't imagine that guy making the roster at our pick.

I expect us to make closer to 8 picks than 11 if we can make some moves.

Getting 2027 picks will be very difficult.
