I compiled this list. These are all the QBs drafted in the first round starting from 2000, games they played and started in their rookie year so we can compare them all to Mac.

Lots of different career trajectories in this list. Some turned out to be stars, some well.. didn't. A lot of them like Mac were named starter very early in their rookie career. Some of these guys obviously had no business being drafted in the first round.

The average passer rating here was 76.5. Mac is way above that. I would say for all QB's picked in the first round Mac is for sure above the average rookie first round QB even if he hasn't taken the league by storm yet.

This list also proves that it's hard to jump to conclusions after one season about anyone.

I thought overall the best rookie season was Herbert by quite a bit and compiling these stats show that I think.

Top 10 rookies in passing yards - obviously keeping in mind the 17th game

Mac also in the top 10 for passer rating for a rookie in this group

Maybe it's because I'm a Pats Fan in Atlanta, but Mac continuously reminds me of Matt Ryan. Mac has better rookie stats, but Matt had a more challenging situation, going to a 4-12 dumpster fire of a team (thanks Mike Vick and Bobby Petrino) and leading them to a 11-5 record and the playoffs. Both are a little challenged in the arm strength department, but make up for it with the cerebral aspects of their game. It would be quite the success if Mac had Ryan's career.

some of these guys had decent numbers which are at least comparable to Mac stat wise, but fizzled.

For some reason I thought I remembered Ben having a really good rookie year but his numbers are a bit less than that.

Rodgers no td’s, 1 pick what a bum

we need list of at least 10 starts

One thing to also consider for QB's drafted in the first round. A ton of them are being drafted to really bad teams. Good teams are usually not drafted QB's very high.

I am really looking forward to seeing Mac during action in his second year ( first of course his most important game against Bills ). When I am looking at this chart what first comes to mind is.... RG 3 and his terrific rookie season. What happened next everyone is familiar with I think. I hope Mac is a franchise QB and he is able to prove it next season.
IMO this season is a success no matter how it ends.

Thanks for all the work.
My takeaway is that Rookie year stat's can't predict whether someone will become a Franchise QB. Injuries, coaching, personnel decisions and sheer luck all come into play.
If one had the time, it would be fun to work backwards: pick maybe 12 bona fide Franchise QB's and track the drivers of their success.

Alex Smith 1 TD 11 INTs in his rookie year and he went first overall in that draft. Forgot it was that bad. That's almost Ryan Leafish....
