Last year Roberts was placed on IR after having a very good camp. Word was that he could have been ready by late November, but they could not hold out that long for him. As the season turned out we were remarkably healthy while also remarkably thin at cornerback.

We can hold an injured player on the 53 as long as we want. Seems the PS has room to hold an injured player or two. Certainly no team is going to sign them. Player gets paid, stays in the playbook and rehabs with the best.

Now this may happen and I am unaware or it may be with the attrition of football and the need to game plan during the week each one of those places is needed for a healthy player.

Just never known us to have an injury to a player with promise or at a position of need to be held on the PS until healthy.

PS players are paid $117,300 yearly. Injured rookies are paid $333,000. PS players do not accrue a season toward free agency. Players on IR do.

If I were an injured player, I would not agree to being waived in the hopes of being placed on the practice squad.

Thanks, that explains it.

Willard, I think the other piece you're missing is that teams aren't allowed to just cut injured players. They're required to use the waive/injured designation, which means that if unclaimed, the injured player reverts to the team's IR. The player then has the option to negotiate an injury settlement + release, after which he cannot immediately re-sign with the releasing team.

IOW, there's no mechanism to "stash" an injured player on the practice squad. Getting around this would require a massively illegal collusion with the player to hide his injury and offer him IR-level compensation to join the practice squad. This would be blown wide open if the player were claimed by another team and showed up with his arm in a sling, at which point the Patriots would lose all their draft picks and Tom Brady would be frozen in carbonite. (As for the idea that "certainly no team will claim" an injured player, the Jets just claimed D. Roberts who the Pats waived injured.)

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew you'd check in. The magic word!! LOL... not unlike...

...a signal?

Ah yes I see that ok makes sense.

I meant no one would claim off practice squad as it is a 3 game hold on the 53. Jets can let Roberts go tomorrow.

What are players on IR allowed to do during the year, attend meetings, practice, etc?

Basically they can do all team related activities except they can't practice.
