Springs to sign with Pats

Love this signing. He is the best free agent DB left this year. His versatility is going to be invaluable and now there's no need to use a high draft pick on a CB in what is a very weak class. Now the only pressing need on D is at LB (and maybe safety to a lesser extent).

Hopefully Rodney or Tank comes back because I just don't see where a solid third safety is going to come from this year--Springs(??) Maybe a trade with a team that needs a high upside but underachieving 3rd year RB (KC, Denver anyone?) is in the works.....Wishful thinking, as I'm sure we'll be trying to snag a safety in the draft.

I don't see Springs playing CB for the Pats. I see him playing safety. I don't think Bodden is out just yet, but its not looking good for him.

It's possible that Bodden values (financially) himself more than the Pats value him.

Big news. How much is he going to make though?

Agreed. Depth move if anything. Can play FS if called on or CB in spot-duty. Assuming the deal is cap-friendly, a solid signing nonetheless.

Until he proves otherwise, I will refer to him only as Shawn Springs (hamstring).

3rd safety? Bring back Lewis Sanders? He was pretty solid late last year. Spann?

If the Pats are paying him 3M or more, they are expecting him to start.

for those saying he wont start..go back and watch some Skins games. He still plays at a high level

Anything is better than O'Neil!

I may be alone here, but I think O'Neal played much better than most posters here seem to think. First of all, he did make some picks last season. The Charger game, which everyone points to, Rivers had the ball right on the money, and Charger receivers make some great catches. O'Neal actually had some pretty good coverage on a couple of those plays. And to me, neither Wilhite nor Wheatley showed much.

I beleive that Lew Sanders is still unsigned. He'd be fine as a backup safety and corner.

yes ..easily

In that case our secondary looks like:

Springs #1 CB
Hobbs #2 CB
Wilhite/Wheatley Nickel CB
Meriweather SS
Sanders FS

So the Pats have their starters in place and will be drafting developmental cb/s?

I agree, hes still solid, add to that Wilhite and Wheatley have another year under their belt and we're looking better back there.
People forget Assante wasnt gangbusters his first year, actually took him longer than that to pick things up so Im expecting more out of last years rookies.

We need one more veteran backup, our #3 safety. BTW, we already have three developmental defensive backs on the team: Wheatley, Wilhite and Richardson.

Hobbs #2 CB
Wilhite/Wheatley Nickel CB

no. theres always competition but based on whos on roster..Springs is our best CB

Springs at his best was much better than Hobbs but I would say Hobbs is better now though....But you never know maybe Springs has one really good year left on his way to a ring. Either way he still plays at pretty high level and will bring something to the table. The best thing to me though is that because of his age he wont be holding either Wheatly or Whilhite back.
