There are quite a few good Red Sox players who have never had their number
retired.

I was never on board with the decision to retire Fisk's number.
When he left for the White Sox over the post date on his contract, he
eliminated himself as a candidate in my eyes.

The Red Sox retired numbers mean a lot more that the Celtics who seem
to retire too many players numbers.

I am afraid that if the Sox resign Varitek he is going to get his number retired
when he retires to please the pinkhats of the world.

I hope the Sox find a young catcher and move on so that Varitek ends up
with another team to Finnish his career.

If Varitek does not retire a Red Sox player, there is a good chance they
will not retire his number.

If you think I am crazy, I have already heard from people like Butch Stearns
and Tony Mazzarotti that they would not be surprised to see his number
retired. Stearns actually considers Varitek a candidate for the HOF.

The media is full of pinkhats (Stearns is #1).

Well, SOMEONE from the 2004 Red Sox has to get their number retired at some point.

Manny has sadly burnt that bridge, but I hope some day to see his #24 retired with the Red Sox. Regardless of how ugly the divorce was, he was one of the greatest Red Sox of all-time.

Same goes for Pedro Martinez. There is still love in RSN for him, as evidenced by his emotional return to Fenway in 2006. Get that #45 up there. We've never seen a better pitcher in a Red Sox uniform.

But you have to, HAVE TO retire David Ortiz's #34. He meant too much to this team to be an after thought when his playing career ends.

What's funny is #5 was a hands-off number after Nomar Garciaparra left. That is, until New England native and Red Sox fan Rocco Baldelli joined the party.

Right now, the only current hands off non-retired numbers are:

#14 - Jim Rice
#21 - Roger Clemens
#24 - Manny Ramirez (this could change very quickly, but I'm guessing his number won't be touched for a while)
#45 - Pedro Martinez

I remember Fisk (I turn 47 next week).
He left over the post date on his contract (loophole).
Sure the Sox screwed, up but he still left and had nothing good to say
about the Sox until recently. I would have had no problem with him going
into the HOF with a whitesox cap.

Don Nelson averaged 10.3 ppg & 4.9 trb - A great role player but far from a superstar.

Dennis Johnson was a good player, but he did not play for us long enough
to have his number retired. (Reminds me of Colorado retiring Bourques number)

DJ was in Boston for half of his career (7 years) and Bourque played for the Avalanche for only 1 full season.

every number the celtics have in the rafters deserves to be there. its not the hall of fame. stats arent everything and can be very misleading . dj should be in the hall of fame. his number at the very least should be retired. dj was great not just good as you describe him. dj could have had far better stats but he had bird parish and mchale to get the ball to. dj was also a lock down defender guarding the other teams best.

What about Len Bias?

Were you one of those guys calling for his number to be retired days after his death?

I am glad the Celtics retired Reggie Lewis's number, but I am still against
Don Nelson..
