Slightly OT: isn't this what happened to Robert Edwards?

Pretty much. The doctors were able to get Edwards stabilized and treated promptly, though from what i remember it was a VERY near run thing. He came VERY close to losing his lower leg.

I and many others often wondered how New England's fortunes might have changed had that injury never occurred. Edwards certainly made the loss of Curtiss Martin a lot more bearable after that first season with the Patriots.

Yeah, I thought about that too... but if we still had RE in 1999, maybe we do better than 8-8 , and Pete Carroll doesn't get fired, and Belichick takes a job somewhere else.

But yeah, it sure hurt at the time. It was like the Pats were cursed... every time we got a decent RB, something happened. Martin left, Meggett turned out to be a major d-bag (though in fairness he may not have had much time left anyway), and then that happens to Edwards.

From what I recall about Edwards injury, he was not happy with the lack of urgency displayed by the ambulance crew after his incident. I think he said that they didn't have their lights on and were stopping at lights. If traffic was worse or if they stopped for coffee, Edwards could have lost his leg.
