I was reading over Reiss' picks for the 53 with him having O'Callaghan making the team with Slater's injury. Reiss clearly thinks that Slater is lost for the year.

When I saw it, it looked like Slater either broke his forearm or dislocated his elbow, but I couldn't tell which. In either case, they are extremely painful injuries (we lost Thomas and Seau to those injuries in the past).

What do you all think??? Slater gets IRed???

I would guess dislocated elbow. When he rolled over, you could see the big bump where his elbow looked out of the joint. It also flopped a little when he grabbed it.

I would guess he get's IR'ed as well.

Yeah, I think it is a dislocated elbow too. I think he will be IRed since it is could take 6-8 weeks for him to recover and he isn't important enough to keep a roster spot open for his return.

Yeah, I'd say that its broken...OUCH!!

Not sure I saw what happened. Did he get blown up by a big hit on another punt return?

Yup that looked bad one of those injuries that make you cringe to watch.

Sux to lose one of our best special teamers but even if he will be ready before the season ends you can't hold a roster spot for several weeks for him. Looks like IR.

I am not doctor but I imagine a dislocated elbow is not like a finger where you just pop it back in place and that could be a break could have ligiment damage it looked ugly. But any chance that is is a 2 or 3 week thing?????

side note who ever used the exclamation points last night to show his glee about this should be banned from this site that was pathetic. (sorry to gripe here but the thread was locked when I read it there.)

They are saying hyperextended.

It looks like it's backwards in that picture, I'm pretty sure your elbow is not suppose to bend like that.

Picture stolen from the Herald's site.

(Mr No-Medical-Knowledge. If that was a leg, you'd say "Uh-oh, torn ligament for sure".)

Just to say that I'm really sorry to see this.

I've seen very little of Slater but I was warming to him a lot last night. He was part of the crew that got so badly burned in the first quarter but it seemed to me that he was reacting in the best possible way -- with fiery determination to make plays. Good luck to him!

He was simply returning a kick and stumbled forward trying to avoid a tackle and his momentum carried over as he tried to brace himself and put his arm to the ground as he fell

Agreed. That stuff is ridiculous.

looked a lot worse than it actually was

the replay didn't look good for his elbow and arm. it seemed to bend in an unnatural direction. the commentators quickly diagnosed it as a serious injury. Slater looked in agony.

Commentators are not doctors. That said, even if it is "only" a bad hyperextension, it could keep him out for weeks.

i thought they needed MD's to be in broadcasting??

keeping him out for weeks means IR for the super gunner. that'd be a shame.

You appear to be right.

Look at how his hand is resting...it's straight down with his thumb towards the camera- unless he is extremely lucky and he is double jointed in his elbow that to me looks like that's an elbow dislocation or a break.

Again, I am no doctor. I don't claim to be. I definitely don't have any experience with a dislocated elbow/broken arm. And the way Slater was in pain, it seemed to be more than just a hyper-extension. If that is all it is, that is great for him and bad for the opposition..

If they place him on IR before the cuts, he is done. But if they keep him on the roster and IR him after, he can return, right? Depends on how other teams value Slater as comapred with other potential cuts (BJGE, Ninkovich, etc.). If BJGE is teh JAG that some claim, then he could slide through and be re-signed.

Slater is such a klutz. No one was even near him.
