Sign the Beast XXVII: DT Nick Fairley won't be back with Lions

Last I saw him, he was pretty huge.

As one poster eloquently put it, I don't blame Revis for taking the money and I don't blame Belichick for not allowing his team to be held hostage to injury.

With Revis gone and it being what it is, with the additions of Fairley and Sheard, I'd go into the Draft feeling pretty good (much better) about our defense.

I I have said that the Pats are likely to fix the losses in their secondary by improving their front seven. I think the Pats are going to get players to rush the passer so that people aren't complaining that QBs have all day to pass. Many great defenses have weak secondaries with a great front seven.

I'm fairly sure he won't be coming to NE.

The only thing is, nasty front 7s can wear down as the game goes on. Happened to the Seahawks in the SuperBowl. Happened to the Ravens and Lions in the playoffs.

There is a chance that Fairley may not get the money he wants and decides to take an one year prove it deal to cash in next year. If that happens, the Pats can sell him on how Revis ended up getting a record setting deal doing that with the Pats along with a Super Bowl ring.

I have a co-worker who is a Lions fan. He said Fairley is the only player he can recall to actually have gotten fatter during training camp, when everyone else was losing weight and getting in shape.

Fairley is in Cincinnati today. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out and what his market looks like.

My guess is he doesn't leave Cincinnati without a contract.

Fairley and Sheard and I'd go into the Draft feeling pretty good about things.

Why is everyone obsessed with Sheard? Am I missing something? Has his role changed?

I'm only going off of sack numbers (and FF) but he's had a steady and quick decline going:
2011 - 8.5 sacks 5 FF
2012 - 7 sacks 1 FF
2013 - 5.5 sacks 1 FF
2014 - 2 sacks 0 FF

The Seahawks lost several key players to injuries in the Super Bowl. And I think their secondary makes their front seven look better than it is and that was banged up.

Unsuccessful move from DL to OLB. I have a hunch BB would use him to much better effect than the Browns did.

That could make some sense. He's spent his career being overshadowed by Suh, and now he's being overshadowed by Suh in FA. If he can come to a place like NE and be a force, he could enter FA next year as the clearly-established top DT on the market.

Fair enough on the position change, but we had Ayers play a rather effective DE while Jones was injured, once Jones returned he barely saw the field.

Unless we upgrade Jones or Ninko it appears there is little to no interest by the coaching staff in a 3 or 4 player DE rotation. The best player will play every snap at DE and that's that. It would seem that DE is a position we either spend big on or simply insure there is a body to placehold incase of injury.

I am NOT an X's and O's guy, but it's my casual opinion from reading about him that Sheard's lack of production came simply from a lack of playing time under a new scheme and a new coach. It just strikes me as very much being an Akeem Ayers kind of situation in regards to his lack of recent production.

In 2011 and 2012 he was a 4-3 DE under **** Jauron. In 2013 the Browns moved to a 3-4 and transitioned him to OLB. Didn't go very well, but on the upside these are the kinds of circumstances where you can potentially get a premium pass rusher at a discount.

If Sheard is signed, it creates a better pass rush platoon and also a potential successor to Ninkovich (age) or Jones (FA in 2 years).

I definitely agree it sounds exactly like Ayers and it's very real we sign him, I just don't see him playing much based on how much Ayers should without Jones and how little Ayers played with Jones.

I'll certainly take him as the Ayers replacement for injury depth if the price is right.

With an uncertain CB situation as it stands I certainly hope we create pressure whatever way we can, some 3 and 4 DE packages or strong pass rushing DT's will certainly help.

no thanks, completely overrated. would prefer randy starks or that guy from the browns..
fairley is never in shape/takes snaps off.

With all of our CAP room via incompetence (arrogance?) , why is he not here signing a contract as we speak?

I never thought I'd read anything dumber than stuff I read in here during deflate gate. Somehow you found a way to write the dumbest thing I've read in years. This is a ban able statement.
