I am sick and tired of all these "experts" getting on tv and writing in the newspaper that starters should not be on special teams. This is the most ignorant stance anyone can take, first of all it is 1/3 of a football game. Secondly the best athletes should be on the field during this time to ensure that your team doen't give up 7 points on a kick return or give up long returns on a regular basis and on most teams the best athletes are their best players. Every team has 2 or 3 special teams guys that really shine in that role and make a significant contribution to their team every week; mostly on special teams but they also contribute in backup roles and situational football as well. If this were not true then there would not be a team in the league that would employ them. Our two guys would be Izzo and Davis (stone as of late). Davis has filled in at linebacker and Safety in the past. Izzo has been a solid situational player at linebacker throughout his career with the Pats.
Only 53 can be on the roster and with injuries and backup considerations it really limits how many spots can be taken up by a guy who is one dimensional. It amazes me that the "experts" have yet to pick up on how and why the Patriots can overcome major injuries and still win. They hold stock in versitile players who can play many positions and in many different situations. They feel that every roster spot is very valuable (except for Klecko's), they sign football players not "specialists" and they put the best player for that position out on the field regardless if it is offense, defens or special teams!
Thanks for letting me vent!
