Patriots Player Departure Shaq Mason traded to the Bucs

This move makes no sense lol

If we had let him walk in FA, we might have got a higher compensatory pick higher than a 5th rounder

im mad. Mad as hell
That would have been for the 2024 draft since Mason was still under contract for 2023.

If they re-sign Trent Brown and trade for La'el Collins, the COMP pick isn't touched, right?

I think a line of Brown-Wynn-Andrew-Onwenu-Collins would be...huge.

Who are the back-ups because they're likely to see 50% of the snaps at OT based on the injury history of Brown and Collins..

And - better still - we would’ve had the cap room to re-sign Joe Thuney.
The Pats had the Cap room to re-sign Thuney. Thuney chose to go to the Chiefs.. Again, you have your story screwed up..

I like Cajuste on the left and Herron on the right...

Seriously, I was just throwing that out there. There are plenty of quality players floating around who won't cost a pick, and more coming, with some teams way over the CAP right now.

When he hits free agency in 2024? You don’t know that a 5th this year is worth more than a 4th two years from now, do you? You also don’t know how the comp picks determined. No, a 30-year-old Mason wouldn’t have yielded higher than a 5th.

The move itself isn’t the problem. It is only a problem if this isn’t a prelude to another move.
So we still had 2 years of a prime G? Man this makes it a lot worse

Also, unless you have a crystal ball, you can be sure of what we would have got as compensatoey

Some IOL are going for way over 12-13m and i know that this is a very strong point in the comp formula

I haven’t checked, but any WRs on the Pats do this over the last 8 games?

Gage's final eight games with Falcons last season: 50 catches, 611 yards, 3 TDs.

If you want to commit 30 million (20 million guaranteed) based off a very small sample size when he was getting forced the ball 9 times or more a game (because there was no one else to throw to), Go for it. He’s not getting 9 touches a game in Tampa.

What surprises me the most with this move is that Mason is only 28 years old (seems like he's been here forever). I'm guessing that a couple of things played into this - would he play on his non-guaranteed, cheap contract through next year? or was he going the Gilmore route?

And/or, BB wants money to grab some guys tomorrow and didn't want to have to borrow it all from next year. He probably thinks he can fix the OL "enough" pretty cheaply with the draft and the guys in house - Herron, Desjarlais, Cajuste, Williams, etc. - but needs some $$ for D talent.

Who cares if he was going to hold out. Make them hold out for two years if they really feel it’s too risky. It’s time these divas honor the contract they signed, and time we put a foot down. Don’t play, don’t get paid.

The one guy I thought the Pats would have interest (Feliciano) was signed by the Giants. I can't find the list of free agents who were cut/had void years.

Herron has played OK at times but can't remember which side that was (he has played both). Cajuste's time is now...he needs to show what he can do and not get injured.

I’m not surprised he was moved, I had this on my radar for a while.

I’d be fine with that if we had brought back Teddy K, but without him oof don’t love it.

Is he gonna pay Robinson $23 mil?

Christian kirk reset the market by getting paid $21 million as a #3 receiver.

Nope, that’s a really bad deal by Jacksonville, and definitely makes it much harder to get a deal done. I want Robinson but I wouldn’t go near that money.

That was seriously the worst contract I've ever seen. How does Christian Kirk get elite all pro WR $? At that rate N"Keal Harry's worth went from a bag of chips to a box of oreo's.

Not a ton; saves about $7m against the cap. That, plus only a 5th, makes me think the Pats had issues with his play last year.

Maybe I don't know how to break down film then. I thought Mason was good last year. Guess that's why I'm an armchair GM unlike the genius who won NFL Executive of the Year.

I can't make any sense from this move. Must be some solid rationale. It's just I can't see it.

They tried Herron at BOTH LT and RT. He played poorly at both until the play-off game against Buffalo where he subbed in for Wynn and played decently.

I agree that Cajuste needs to step up. So do Sherman and Durant, honestly.
