Patriots Player Departure Shaq Mason traded to the Bucs

Mason has been unbelievable since coming here. He's taken quite the leap from college and provided us with some big moments I'll never forget. What a blessing him and Thuney were. Both those guys killed it here.

hard to take but lets see where we are when this is all done. I find it hard to believe there isn't a plan

Always kind of funny that people think our players are worth so much. Then when they don't bring back as much it is always, Bill gave them away. Just perhaps, we over valued how good they were.
I am sorry, but regardless of the metrics, Mac certainly wasn't given much time to pass for most of the season. It seemed to get better by the end of the year, but even then, Mac wasn't standing back there with tons of time.

Let make this a stickie of this post to look at for next FIVE MONTHS of free agency which hasn't even started.

After all, Game One must be this weekend. Or perhaps it is not, but the team won't make any transactions to improve the team in the net five months.
It's the whole thing, from coaching staff choices to who is being resigned and who is being let go or traded. Seems terrible.

Not in this case. Even non Patriots fans are a bit stumped on this trade.

Reiss did mention trading for Lael Collins from Dallas as a rumor.

All I care is to keep Mac healthy. We need a dominant OL to run block. I hope BB has some players in mind in the upcoming draft.

This doesn't look great on paper at all, but can't really judge until we see the corresponding moves.
Yeah Todd, expect to add a RT shortly, not sure though if it will be T. Brown or L. Collins.

A top guard gets only a 5th round pick? Since it's the Bucs pick, it will basically be a 6th rounder.

It's actually not that bad a pick. Pick 170. We essentially recoup the pick we traded the Raiders for Trent Brown (#164).

Is it really a buyer’s market though? Everyone knows the cap is exploding in 2023. That can be taken advantage of with large signing bonuses and back-weighted salaries.

On the other hand, the CB and WR costs have been a little lower than expected, so you could be onto something here. The cost for linemen has been as high as I had thought though.

G is below even last yr. OT has not developed yet so we will see. C was ok but there was quality. TE was insane bc there was little quality on offer. Everything else is low and its gonna get lower. Tons of good players still out there..

I ****ing hate it...but I probably won't in a month or 2 when the dust settles.
Same. I sit here questioning "WTF Bill?" I wish I knew what the plan was.
Of course they would, but so would rationally thinking human beings. "Openly tanking" is hyperbolic nonsense.
Tanking. No one is tanking. Kinda wish we could smack these people, eh? I get the frustration, truly, but it's March 15th, as @mgteich pointed out. Long way from a finished work.

look how many 4/5/6 round picks are starting on OL's around the league.....on rookie contracts

How many are as good as Shaq Mason tho?

They're counting on 7M in cap space and a 5th rounder to improve the team more than Shaq Mason could, with a 2nd year QB... It's certainly a curious move, if nothing else

2022 gonna be a long season

I will miss his run blocking for sure. Arguably, his pass protection was nearer to average. Not bad, by any means, but it was never his strong suit.

But seeing him in front of a pitch or a screen pass, I always knew that a defender or two were about to get wiped out

Any

Joe Thuney was a 2nd rounder
Shaq himself a 4th
Ted Karras a 6th
Andrews Undrafted
Stork 4th.
Koppen 5th I believe.
Stephen Neal was undrafted
Brian Waters undrafted (not a Pats pick, but one of the better guards they've had in BB's tenure).

Only first round guard they've taken is Mankins, and that was at 32. There are a handful of positions I trust them to restock longterm no matter where they're picking, and guard is one of them. Whether one they draft is ready to start in 2022 is still a gamble of course.
Is anyone of potential hanging around in the PS?

One, and he plays for the cowboys.

I'm sure Bill has something on his plate but you don't just replace Shaq Mason.

Bill, why do you feel the need to test my faith like this!?

So….both starting guards are gone? We can do this!

Resign Brown and shift him to LT
Move Wynn to LG
Onwenu to RG
Acquire La'el Collins to play RT

BOOM

Id keep an eye on D.Williams that was cut from BUF as well..
