Patriots Rumor Semi OT: Lombardi stopped BB draft Warren Sapp

I give the Jets credit for going up and getting a player they like. ie: Sanchez and Greene.

I know BB does that occasionally as well. ie: Jackson,Warren. But the Jets seem to have executed that strategy much better than BB.

I'd say the jury is still out on Sanchez and Green. Not just because they haven't yet shown elite performance or consistency but because the price paid for them leaves the JETS short of picks in the potential sweet spots of an historically deep draft.

To be fair, instead of taking Sapp they traded down with SF and picked up a #1 in the following draft. That #1 was used by the Ravens to take Ray Lewis, so it kind of worked out. Of course, Belichick and Lombardi were both fired by then.

And let's not forget that Sapp while a great three technique 4-3 DT really didn't fit into the role of a 3-4 NT or DE. The guy was a penetrator, not a guy who was great at tying up blockers and letting others make the plays. Sapp wouldn't have fit the Browns' system anyway. Sapp probably wouldn't have been the player he turned out to be if he didn't go to a Tampa 2 4-3 that allowed him to run hog wild.

I agree. At this point Sanchez has a ways to go to be an above average QB. Being the 5th pick (even without what it took them to trade up which wasn't a lot because of Mangini's stupidity), Sanchez needs to be a great QB or is a bad pick for the Jets. He could turn into an elite QB or he could not progress much from where he is now. People talk about him as if he already reached his potential which he hasn't gotten remotely close to.

As for Greene, I think the bar is much lower for him. But yet, people are already talking about him as if he is a 1200-1400 yard RB. He hasn't proven that he is yet.

As for all the picks given up, I agree if neither of these guys live up to their potential and expections, the Jets' 2009 draft will be a disaster. If they meet or exceed them, then it will be cosidered a good to great draft.

I wouldn't call it executing a strategy, as much as I would call it trading away your entire draft for 2 guys. If they both work out to be great players then I guess it's worth it. But I wouldn't say they have outdrafted BB in that respect.

I will give them credit for seeing Revis for what he'd become and moving up to get him.

Tennenbaum has done a remarkable job at drafting,only second to Polian at this point...Belichick is missing Pioli and Dimitroff and those guys really helped

I don't know about this anymore. I would have agreed with you in the past, but I am now firmly on the Floyd Reese bandwagon.

I think he helped us alot in his first draft here, and I can't wait to see what his input leads to on Thursday.

At the fifth overall pick? A solid starter for a couple of years? Why even draft a QB with the fifth pick if all he is going to be is a "solid starter" for a couple of years. When you draft a QB with the fifth pick, you want him to be a great QB for a decade or longer. He doesn't have to be Brady or Peyton Manning, but you don't want a Marc Bulger or Jake Delhomme (both of whom were a solid starter for only a few years, but never spectacular) as a high draft pick like that. If Mark Sanchez has a career like Bulger, I would say he was a bad pick for the Jets considering where he was drafted.

Clearly the problem here is the wording. For me great means Brady, Manning maybe Brees of the current bunch. Montana, Elway, Marino and the list goes on.
When I say solid starter for a couple of years I'm talking Matt Hasselbeck, Donovan McNabb types. They are not 'great' QBs in my estimation but good solid starters. If Sanchez reaches that level then its a successful pick.
