Really good read!
Tracing the roots of a legend: What has made Patriots OL coach Dante Scarnecchia an all-time great
Dante Scarnecchia's career has spanned so long that he has coached Vietnam veterans and players reasonably young enough to be the grandchildren of those veterans.
His offensive lines have created pockets for the game's greatest passer, working in tandem with the quinoa and anti-inflammatory veggies to prolong Tom Brady's career. His offensive lines paved the way for monster seasons by Eric ****erson, first with SMU and then with the Indianapolis Colts.
He has coached a Hall of Famer in John Hannah and a smattering of All-Pros. He has coached too many future coaches to count. He has coached cancer survivors, a former NCAA wrestling champion (Steve Neal), a future SWAT team member (Cole), and a future mountain climber. One of his early players, Arciaga, climbed Everest in April, 2012. Reached 20,000 feet.
Three days after Scarnecchia's 68th birthday this past February, the longtime O-Line coach agreed to come out of a retirement that lasted two years. The Pats had fired his replacement, Dave DeGuglielmo, in the wake of the meltdown at Denver in the AFC Championship game. Injuries contributed to the struggles, but the line was an unmistakable mess.
Scarnecchia is now wrapping up his 31st season with the Patriots, the longest any active coach has spent with a single NFL franchise
