Stallworth cleared for action; Sunday practice notes
By Erik Scalavino, Patriots.com and PFW Staff Writer

WR Donté Stallworth takes part in practice, and QB Matt Cassel looks forward to taking part in Friday's preseason game. Plus, all the important developments from Sunday's late afternoon practice.

Play of the Day
WR Wes Welker 20-yard touchdown catch
In red-zone action, QB Tom Brady dropped back to pass and spotted Welker open along the end line, running toward the back corner pylon. Throwing off his back foot, Brady lobbed a perfect pass to Welker, who got free in between two defenders.

Who's Hot
CB Randall Gay
Gay is getting a lot of reps and is holding his own no matter who's lined up opposite him.

Who's Not
K Stephen Gostkowski
The second-year kicker was concentrating on long field goals (45-50 yards) and missed several of them. He had the distance, but couldn't quite straighten them out.

More Sunday Notes

One of the biggest stories of the day Sunday was the weather: it was a postcard-perfect summer day.
Temps in the mid-80s, no humidity, cloudless blue skies.

In the only practice of the day, players were dressed in shorts and jerseys - no pads, except for helmets.

Special teams was a focus of practice again today. The team worked on situational kicking, such as free kicks after safeties and onside kicks. They also tried some punt and field goal blocks.

At the start of practice, the offense walked through plays on one field, while the defense focused on personnel alignments and responsibilities on the other.

Still no sign of CB Asante Samuel at training camp.

TE David Thomas was the only player still on the PUP list who was not at Sunday's practice. Players wearing red (no-contact) jerseys remained the same: RB Laurence Maroney, plus LBs Junior Seau and Eric Alexander.

T Wesley Britt saw significant time on the right side of the offensive line.

With New England's first preseason game just five days away, the Patriots appear to be getting involved in more drills that simulate game-type conditions.

Glad to see Gay is doing well.
