I just listened to that audio clip (click on the link at the beginning of the article).

It made me sick. I thought I understood the game but I guess I was and am naive. He's talking about damaging people in a way that will likely affect them for the rest of their lives.

If I'm naive, and I may well be, the NFL has to say, "OK. We screwed up in the past by letting 'He got Jacked up' run for a couple of seasons on Monday night and for letting anyone think they could get away with what Payton and Williams did, but we are drawing a big bright line here and now. It might not be 100% fair and we might be scapegoating those guys, but that's the way it's gonna have to be."

Payton has to stay out a year. Williams has to never coach again. I wouldn't come down as hard on the players, but they will have to pay as well.

As we who are parents are fond of saying when our kids screw up: "This can become a learning moment."
